Gauges go off while driving, then come back on later

While driving my '98 Caravan, sometimes all gauges go out. If I shut the car off for a couple of hours and start up, then all gauges work again. This is an problem that happens every now and then. Any ideas as to what is the cause?

HI, there is an electrical short in the dash. i recommend gaining access to the back side of the instrument cluster to inspect all connections and wire harnesses. replace the entire wiring harness if found to be faulty.

Could be different problems.
The cluster issue could be a problem in the printed circuit board inside the cluster.
The cooling fan problem could be low coolant, a blown fuse, a faulty temp sensor, fan motor, or relay.

when the gauges go out try pounding on the top of the dash if the gauges come back on it is probably a loose connection going into the gauges

Gauges act up and engine shuts off

What year and model is the van? If it's a 97-2001 caravan, then there were issues with the clusters cloking up, usually from an electrostatic discharge. Generally they would still run, just could'nt use the gauges. There is a printed circuit board on the back of the cluster that is succeptable to electric spikes. The most common cause is a spike induced from the secondary ignition cables into the main engine wiring harness. Look at the ignition wires on the rear of the engine, they may be routed too close to the harness under the upper intake plenum. The data bus wires run between all of the modules on the van and any electrical spike can cause this. There was also issues with spikes from the door lock actuators/latches. If they're buzzing when you hit the power locks this may be your problem.

Dashboard gauges dont work, 1998 dodge caravan

These vehicles seem to have a problematic short, my grandfather has the same vehicle with the same problem, i found the short under the carpet on the driver side of the vehicle, under the gas pedal, sometimes wires can crack and break.

Electrical and slipping Transmission

Transmission and gauges are probably unrelated. My '98 Caravan had 2 bad solder connections on the back of the instrument cluster where the connector attached. It takes about 10 minutes to get the cluster out. The bad solder joints were easy to spot on mine. It took 2 years for me to find the problem, but only 30 minutes to fix it and it hasn't happened again since (almost a year).
