1999 Subaru Outback Tailgate Latch does not Actuate

The tailgate latch of my 1999 Outback does not actuate either by using the key or by using the keyless entry fob. There a mechanical sound sounds when the latch is engaed via these methods, but the tailgate does not open. I have taken the cover off the back of the tailgate and was able to open the tailgate manually. I've removed the entire locking mechanism from within the tailgate, It appears that there is nothing that would push on the latch when the rod attached to the external handle is depressed and the horizontal bar is moved. It almost seems as if there is a piece missing. Would appreciate any advice.

There should be a piece of plastic or metal that hold the bar and is connected to the outer handle.

Really bad idea. This will cost you lower fuel mileage, danger of cargo loss. Mythbusters have run tests proving that the aero effects with the tailgate up form a cushion of air in the bed which reduces drag. None of my business I know.

Annoying, but easy to fix: Actuate the opening handle and manually rotate the latch to the open position.

2004 GMC Envoy XUV tailgate won't open downward. Tailgate will swing open but will not open downward. Nothing happens when pressing in on pressure pad/switch...it is as if there's no power going to it.

Do you live in a dusty area? My sister lives in dusty New Mexico and had a malfunctioning XUV tailgate. My reasoning was that something must tell the tailgate not to drop down if the glass is up, and if it can't tell, then it will only open sideways.
So we removed the trim panel, and the tailgate was indeed full of dust. By reaching my arm in, I found two plastic optical sensors which tell the gate whether the glass is up or down; both were coated with dust. After cleaning these the tailgate was back to its normal operation. The two sensors are flat, round - about the size of a nickel or dime...I couldn't see them, just found them by guessing that they must be there. Hope this helps!

How to remove a tailgate of a 2005 dodge ram

· Open the tailgate and remove the tailgate liner.
· Remove the ten bolts(5) that secure the tailgate cover(4) to the inside of the tailgate and remove the cover.
· Using a pencil, mark the actuator rod(3) at the control(2) for the latch(1) being serviced.
· Disconnect the actuator rod from the control
· Remove the two bolts(7 and 8) that secure the latch(5) to the tailgate(4) and position the tailgate check cable(6) out of the way.
· Remove the latch and actuator rod from the tailgate as an assembly.
· If required, remove the actuator rod from the latch.
You will have to remove the tailgate cover. The cover will most likely be held on by some of the tailgate metal access cover.

1998 dodge ram 1500 need to open up the tailgate

not sure what you mean by "sealed unit". if your problem is that your tailgate wont latch together properly, check the condition of the tailgate cables and look for damage to the outer covering and cable itself. it could be that the cable is getting caught b/w gate and bed when you close it. due to a misalignment. yes, i would lubricate the mechanisms with wd40, or a quality graphite lubricant. i would also access the internal mechanisms that actuate the tailgate opening. lubricate those parts too. finally make sure that the cable's tang is slid past on the bolt. this should fix your issues.
