Truck won't restart after running out of Gas

I was driving and my low gas light was on, but it said I had 31 miles togo, so I was heading to the gas sation when it chug a couple times on me, so I started going slower trying to make it. The it choked up agian and cut off. I did not try to restart then as I've heard you can mess up the fuel pump.I went and got gas, put 8 gls in it and it still won't start. It won't even try to turn over. Is there a fuse or some knid of reset?

One thing I forgot to mention was that I do have power but it won't even try to turn the motor over. I can turn the key and nothing happens. guage lights come on, radio comes on and lights , but no movement in under the hood

Alright. I've gotten it to where it will try to turn over now, but it won't crank completly. A 20A fuse had blown and that was stopping it from even trying. So now where is the fuel filter or fuel pump? This is a gasoline truck. I've been told to listen for a hummimng sound (fuel filter) when I turn the key, but I don't hear any. Can I change the pump, what else can I try to get it started.

  • trent543 Jun 23, 2009

The truck wouldn't try to start becuse of a 20A fuse under the hood was blown. It was marked PCM B. Once I changed that, the truck tried tried to turn over but wouldn't turn all the way over. Ended up having to change to fuel pump. It took me about 4 hours and I'm not a mech, just read up a little and went to it. Now I'm rolling again.

No, your fuel line is probably empty. If you have diesel engine you probably have an Air Lock, which means you have air pockets in your fuel line or that your fuel pump is actually empty. You'll need to leak the gas a bit just to get rid of those pockets or you'll need to manually pump the fuel into the fuel pump, the probably leak the fuel just to get rid of the air pockets. alternatively, you'll need to make sure your filter has gas in it and the whole concept pretty much is the same above. Secondly if your car runs on gasoline [petrol] you'll just have to make sure there is enough fuel in the filter because your carburator draws from there...

Kick the gas tack in the center bottom. There is an electric fuel pump in there. You ran low and the pump sucked in the junk from the bottom of the tank. Don't kick it hard, just hard enough to jar whatever is in the pump loose.

Verfiy that you have fuel pressure by finding the fuel rail pressure serviice port. There is a black plastic cap that is attched to the fuel line. Remove that cap and use a small screw drive to depress the schrader valve inside. Be carefull to have your eyes covered and a rag around the screwdriver so you don't sprau fuel into your face.

1984 chevy silverado 305cid intermitently missfires @ idle and low speed driving

Of the cuff, I would suspect bad gas. It sounds as if the truck has been seldom driven, and may need a gas additive to "revive" the stale gas.
Some people would put about 10 gallons of "premium" gas in it to see if that would help.
God bless your efforts.

Sounds like float in fuel tank is sticking. Usually caused by using cheap gas. Fill it up and add a bottle of STP gas treatment. It might take more then one tankful w/STP to clean it completely. TIP: don't rely on the computer generated "mileage left" especially when that low on fuel, that is only an estimate. And also don't let it get that low on a regular basis because it will damage your fuel pump, fuel is used to cool electric pump in fuel tank and running it that low will shorten the life of your fuel pump.

I would check the vacuum lines thoroughly as one may have collasped or previous owner replaced with a substandard one, which may be partially collaspe then upon warming up will vacuum itself shut causing the motor to surge then fail to run or start if it happens to be a main line that is affected.

How many more miles do you have when the fuel light comes on?

Depends on a lot of factors:

1. Gas mileage of your vehicle. If you get excellent gas mileage, 50 MPG +, you can go quite a way. But with a 98 GMC Jimmy, you're probably getting 19 MPG at the best.

2. How you drive your vehicle. The gas mileage means nothing if you are street racing and redlining your vehicle through every gear with the low fuel light on. You definitely won't make it very far like that!

3. The make and model of vehicle. There is no set national standard for when the low fuel light illuminates on a vehicle, so they vary greatly anywhere from half a gallon remaining to 2 gallons remaining. In newer vehicles, the ECU actually takes into account how you drive the vehicle and what speeds you typically go as to when to turn on the low fuel light.

For your specific application, I would say it comes on when you have roughly 1 to 2 gallons left which means that as long as you are driving in a fuel conserving manner you can probably make it about 30 miles or so before you'll be running on fumes. But that should be plenty of time to find a gas station right?!

Hope this helps!
