Question about 2007 BMW 335i Coupe

Cooling problem my bmw 07 335i coupe was consuming alot of coolant water like 1 litter per day i checked the issue, it was a radiator problem... helpfully, i changed it and i left it for sometimes. AFTER 2 weeks i re-checked the coolant, it needed like 0.4 litters and i checked the engine oil if its '' milky '' to check if its from the gasket, the oil looks perfect, and there's no white smoke, is there any clue why my car is consuming alot of water in the coolant? maybe because im driving it too fast?

Level of engine output is not related to water consumption at all, you are not doing anything wrong. It's too soon after the leaking radiator to assume that the engine is consuming water. .4 liter is not much to add at all. Some engines hide air pockets within them and it takes weeks to purge all the air out of the sealed cooling system.

After such a workout of your radiator's air purging system, it might now be defeated by some trash under the radiator cap's central venting valve. If this valve is held open by trash in the coolant, the warming engine will just push out water instead of building pressure as it very much NEEDS to. This will cause water consumption when there is really nothing at all wrong. This is also the most likely situation that you are in right now. Remove and clean your radiator overflow tank to eliminate the valve sticking trash and keep an eye on that little valve on your radiator cap.

I often find the valve over sprung such that it won't even work properly on a new cap. I then pry the unit off the cap with the twist of the handle of a cresent wrench and then I cut and stretch the spring pulling that valve shut too hard until I can lift it with my lips easily. The entire unit is only held onto the radiator cap proper with four pin pressed divets around the circumfrence of the black rubbered main unit of the radiator cap. Why they don't fall apart all the time is a wonder to me. At any rate it seems you can't buy working parts sometimes so I include the how to on fixing the vent/air purging valve. It is central to an air free cooling system and an air free cooling system can NOT rust, which is why they are so desirable in the first place. That and pressurized coolant won't boil over until it gets really extra hot. Please ONLY check your radiator cap when the engine is cool.

If you drive a car too hard it will need a lot more cooling!! as it heats uo a lot more causing a higher pressure on your engine, check the thermostat and water pump, they are the two main problems when your engine is using a lot of coolant

Cooling system Solution for overheating


Change thermostat since you change coolant. Also did you fluch radiator and clean the fins on radiator? Make sure new fan clutch works and also that you have proper pressure cap on radiator

Sounds like a bad water pump or radiator. Make sure the radiator fins arent clogged or inside of radiator, water pump not circulating the coolant properly will also cause overheating, old coolant will not properly dissipate heat efficiently and may need flushed. Also make sure the coolant has a 50% mix of water as the water does most of the cooling not the antifreeze. Hope this gives you some good places to start.

Your right that there is not much to a cooling system when you only look at the cooling system without noticing the other components, not really something you do much on aircraft engines cooling systems.

A water pump can have a broken or coroded impeller making the coolant flow too slowly to carry the BTU's that needs to carried off. This usually would allow the user to operate the vehicle for the normal amount of time it would take to reach thermostat opening tempurature, so if it builds presure too quickly or overheats very quickly this may not be the problem. The normal amount of coolant flow through the system depends of the speed of the waterpump at that time, and the position of the thermostat. An egine turning 3000 and a thermostat wide open would produce a flow of about 2 - 3 quarts per 10 seconds. More for larger engines like, say, a v-10 viper.

Or there may be too many BTU's for the system to contend with, like for example, a leaking cylinder head gasket, cracked head/block or something like that which would allow very hot combustion gasses to enter the coolant stream adding huge BTU values to the system as well as increasng the coolant internal presures forcing the radiator cap to "pop" and relieve the system presure into the overflow bottle. In essence, a leaking headgasket acts like a cutting torch shooting hot combustion gasses into the coolant. The amount of time it takes for the system to overpresurize or over heat is a good indicator of coolant being exposed to combustion gasses. The cooling system can be checked for combustion gasses.

Or perhaps the heat being carried is not being effectively removed from the coolant. A radiator can become "sludged" up with stuff and litterally not be able to cool the coolant in the amount of time that the coolant is in the radiator. Sometimes a coolnt flush can help this, but it is only temporary. If the engine is normally producing, say, 250,000 BTU's per minute then the radiator must be able to carry at least twice that amount away durring heat exchanging.

Here's some clarifying questions we could use to help find the problem; (be specific and descriptive)


How long can you run the engine before it either overheats or starts overflowing the coolant?

Does the system presure increase very much when the engine is first started cold?

Is the radiator cap relieving the presure at the specified value?

Do the radiator fans work when needed? If the engine overheats rapidly when started I don't think the fans are an issue unless that is why the engine overheated in the first place taking out the headgaskets.

I have a 1995 325is bmw. i was driving home and the needle went to red. the heat also stopped working the day prior. i also smelt a little antifreeze as well. can anyone help please.


If you dont have heat you definitely need to check your coolant level first. Better make sure to use the right coolant alot of BMWs take G-5 coolant. Then see if you can see water running out of the engine compartment onto the ground after you fill it. The water pump could be leaking. Check the radiator for leaks and make sure your hoses are not leaking if the floor inside has coolant seeping into the carpet your heater core could be leaking. If the water is not leaking you could have a bad fan clutch or a bad resistor on the fan motor or a burned out electric cooling fan. Or something wrong with the circuit for the coolant fan.

My bmw is overheating


first, check coolant level and make sure you have enough coolant to water ratio. if you pop the cap off the radiator and see alot of rust, you might want to flush the system. another thing, with the motor cool and the cap off the rad. start the car. watch for signs that its being circulated{swirls around}. if it dont, the water pump could be bad, or the thermostat is stuck closed and in need of replacement

If you are sure the water isn't leaking somewhere - run the car stationary and look for spots on the floor - then is lost thru evaporation. Look at the caps of the radiator and the state of the expansion bowl.

Hi:
You need to find out if your car is leaking water onto the ground or if it is consuming it internally.

Here is a suggestion: When your car engine is cool, top off the radiator. The next day, before you start it, make sure the radiator is still full, and check under the car for puddles to see if it has leaked. Next,find a dry patch of pavement and start the car and let it warm up. Observe if anything leaks to the ground . If so, you can try to safely see the general location of the leak,to help figure out the problem. Look over all hoses, the radiator, and the water pump area for signs of wetness. If nothing is noted, re check the radiator level after the car cools again. If it is consuming water internally, then you most likely have a head gasket problem.

Have a mechanic pressure test your cooling system for leaks (or buy a tester and do it yourself). Check engine oil to make sure no water is getting into your oil due to a cracked head.

Good point above. Does the fan come on?

If you have no heat, you have air in the heater core.

You say the head gasket is ok because yoou have no oil in the water. Many times the head gaqsket blows combustion into the cooling system only. Get the car up to temp with the radiator cap off, put it in gear, hold the brake and load the engine. If you have a lot of bubblls out of the radiator, you have a blow heade gasket or cracked head.

Check the ignitin timing. Old BMW's would overheat in a heart beat with retarded Ignition timing.

My bet is head gasket because the heater core is air bound
