2006 ram, 4.7L. idle speed is iratic on cold starts. rpm goes from 700 to 1500 and back again until I put it in gear. fuel milage has dropped by 2 mpg. this happened after I changed spark plugs (used oem plugs). after engine warms up, no problem. can't find any vacume leaks and no check engine light.

Idle flare is normal on all newer fuel injected cars. I think maybe you got a little paranoid, probably first spark plug change done by you. Gas milelage is easily explained in 2 ways, one the gov't is making the gas companies put oxygenated fuel into the gas & 2 you could go with a set of bosch oxygen sensors, pick up 15% more gas mileage

1986 Mercury grand Marquis cutting out when slowing down nearly impossible to start. Oil changed, new air filter, new plugs and wires, new fuel filter...?

I had an experience with a 1984 T-Bird with a 302. The 1986 may have the same system. With that car there was a temperature sensor that affected the idle speed once the car was close to warming up.
With even later models there is a "cold start sequence" which is an electronic way of replacing the ancient choke. The "cold" feature set the fuel mix and the RPM and made starts easier. Now you did not say if the starting problem was when hot or cold or both.

The poor performance when slowing down can be related to the idle rpm being set too low once the thermal switch cuts out. What happens is someone tunes the engine for a rpm that may be correct for the car, but the thermal switch has not dropped the rpm yet. Then when the car really heats up, the idle drops even lower and when you take off your foot from the throttle, the throttle closes too much and the engine cuts out when you are slowing.

Put in a new thermostat. The idle settings can not be set until the thermal switches activate to a run position. Also you may have some vacuum lines crossed which are making the cold and hot cycles reverse. There should be a label with vacuum line routing shown stuck on a part that holds the radiator.

the detonation (pinging) is an indication that the fuel/air mixture ratio is out ( lean) or the timing is wrong (too far advanced). The mixture is set by both the HO2S sensor and the O2 sensor so check them out for failure. If it is a V engine check out all 4 units. The timing may indicate a faulty ignition module so look in that area for the hard starting. There will be codes stored but you may have to get an expert to connect the data link correctly top get the CPU to read out Different systems, different leads ,different pin connections

All the above is normal , except 2000rpm is a little high at idle . can be adjusted down to 1500rpm. the computer adjusts the engine speed . in drive the transmission loads up the engine idle drops to 1000rpm . in park engine unloaded rpm increase all normal.

Carburetor idle mixture adjustment for lean burn chrysler engines

On a carbureted engine(the days of old) I had a method of my own
which always seemed to do really well.
Warm up the engine to operating temperature and make sure there is no
operation of the automatic choke. This should mean that the choke flap in the top of carb is standing vertically offering no resistance to airflow.
Hook up a tachometer if the car has'nt got one.
Note the idle speed in PARK.
Turn the fuel/air adjusting screw underneath carb's right or left sideI(NOT the idle speed set screw) IN and note the rpm as you do.If it raises a little, you are getting close.
Go ahead and turn that screw in all the way and lightly seat it(count the turns in from the highest idle reading),then back it out to the highest reading.NOW turn it in slowly until you see the RPM drop slightly.
Now back it out a little so you are at peak RPM again.
REPEAT this with the other side's fuel/air screw.
After you have gained this higher RPM (maybe), then set the idle speed control screw to desired RPM, and be sure to get in the car and while holding the brake, put the car in DRIVE to make sure the idle doesn't drop too low. don-ohio (:^)

Yes, it is normal for a vehicles idle to be high when first starting up, no mater what the temp. If it`s already warmed up to operating temp, it will still have a high idle for a brief moment when starting. Usually this is the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor. Located in the air duct down from the air filter, and before the throttle body.

Main proplems from IAT sensors are to low of an idle at normal temp, or the idle never comes down after warm up.

Your gas milage problems would stem from Oxygen sensors, plugs, wires, timing, etc...

Here is a quick test, just incase your OBD II (Computer, PCM..) memory module is not working properly. With the engine running, using the tips of your fingers, tap on the PCM, if the engine stumbles or stalls and sends troubles codes that light up your check engine light while tapping, if it does, check to make sure all wires are securely attached to it.

1992 chevy blazer idols too low when engine is cold it idols around 800 rpm but when it warms up it drops down to around 400 rpm n alittle lower when i put it in gear

The problem is in the idle air control motor. It is mounted on the throttle body with two bolts, you can pull it off and make sure it is not caked with carbon also check where it mounts on the throttle body and make sure it is not caked with carbon.
