Question about 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer

Hi, I have a Mitsubishi Magna 1996 4 cylinder and the belts squeak, I have been told the pulley needs to be replaced and the Mechanic temp fixed it with a bit of wood, and it didnt squeek for a few weeks, I was wandering if u guys know whaqt he did until i can have it repaired.

Well dude, honestly you don't put wood under the hood!! That's just dumb. Just get the new pulley or whatever it calls for.

its a serp belt

drop the serp belt off

the bolt holding the tension pulley bolt to the tensioner might be right direction thread undo

you can hit out the bearing and get a new bearing
for the existing pulley

or buy a plastic gates pulley that dont last as long

Power steering belt snapped.I have a diagram on the belt path around the steering pump etc, just need someone explain what I need to do to ease the tension so I can put on the new power steering belt?


I am not familiar with the set up on the Magna for tensioning the serpentine belt. Normally there is a tensioner pulley fitted to the engine which has to be moved a little by applying opposite pressure with a tube spanner or ring spanner to release tension on the belt so it may be slipped off and then moved back into position again when refitting. That is probably what you have also.

I suggest you check with the guys on the Magna owners Forum in the link below. They will be able to tell you what to do on that Mitsubishi Magna engine. Indicate when asking which engine you have fitted in your car.

The mechanic who did the work may have gotten coolant on the drive belts or not sufficiently adjusted the belt tension . I'd replace the belt especially if the sides of the belt are shiny.

Makes squealing noise


You need to check the belt that drives the alternator for proper operation. The belt may be old and worn, or a pulley may be not freewheeling, but seized or with a bad bearing. Possibly the tension on the belt is too loose from a worn out tensioner.

First, spray a little water on the belt with engine running and see if noise goes away, possibly a worn belt. Pull the belt off and check all pulleys. Spin them by hand and see if spins easy, no rough feeling or a catch when spun. Check alternator pulley, idler pulley, tensioner pulley, PS pump pulley and A/C compressor pulley-check them all for free wheeling. If good check the tension on the belt when installed. If unsure, have a mechanic check tension with a belt tension tool.
If belt is good and pulleys good, check alternator output with a voltmeter on the battery with engine running. If voltmeter is below 13.5 volts, the charging system is still not working properly. Have it checked out.

How to install alternator belt in mitsubishi magna 1996 model


There are two pullies on the 3.0l V6 engine. If you stand in front of your car and look into your hood, in the left front there is one and then there is another one further back. The one further back is responsible for tightening the belt. You have to undo the plastic cover and lift up you car.
Underneath the pulley there is a screw( size 14) that you have to loosen up and then loosen the screw from the pulley as well. You should be able to move the pulley up or removed it.

Did you ask why the crank pulley needs replaced?

That unit is a solid piece of steel and I can't imagine what could go wrong with it unless it was damaged when it was removed when the timing belt was changed.

I have a 1997 Rodeo with 163,000 miles. It still is running but is showing its age. My son owned a 1995 model and went over 200,000 on it. Both vehicles suffered from excessive rust in the undercarriage.

If you are paying a mechanic to fix that vehicle, I'd propose that it is more expensive to keep running than it is worth.

Again, ask why he wants to replace the crank pulley. If the vehicle runs OK as it is, and his answer is not coherent, skip this repair and drive it for the life it has left with minimal repairs only.

Fan belt squeaking


Hi. Usually, this will lead to the replacement of the belt, itself. Check the condition of the belt. Make sure it is not worn, or cracking. If dry rotting is visible, simply replace the belt. If the tension is beyond factory specs, adjust to correct the issue.

Te magna waterpump changeover


MAGNA 1996 TE you have to pull down all covers of front of motor remove rh wheel and inner plastic protecters to access crank wheel remove crank wheel. rh engine mount and two outer belts lower/lift engine to remove timing belt pulleys ect.remove timing belt to access waterpump lots of labour can email photos if any one needs an idea .of whats involved when replacing water pump. best get a timing belt kit and replace belt ,pulleys as well. then good for 100.0000 kms and plugs as well platium ones by doing on your own can save 800 to 1000 dollars just be carful not to move pulleys on timing belt . good luck i posted this after i had no response .a desiel mechanic guided me though the ordeal a lot of labour for a waterpump it took me 8 hrs straight to do . hope this is useful i didnt need timing kit just belt total cost if you do job $350.00 i got quoted $1500 by mechanic
