My 1974 Buick Apollo has a short circuit in the

My son's 1974 Buick Apollo has a short circuit in the electrical system.How do we find the problem to fix it? We have already replaced the battery and the alternator thinking those were the problems. The battery still dies frequently, and gave the thing a complete tune up and oil change. Any help would be really appreciated!

Is it a short or a drain on the battery? It's important because a short will blow a fuse and a drain will just deplete the battery.First ck your charging voltage at the battery posts. should be between 13.6 and 14.2 volts. Lower the volts the higher the charging ampereage.. AllOk? , Now remove the ground cable at the battery and put a test ight between the post and cable. The prob on the cable and the clamp lead on the batt post. If there is a drain the test light will come on. Make sure everything is off and the doors are closed.. If you have an alarm system, takte its fuse out temp.. If the lite does not come on, put the alarm fuse back in. If the light comes on, There is your drain. If the battery is properly charged, it should tolerate the alarm.. Good luck

YES - Go to Step 3
NO - Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

    Disconnect the driver window switch C2 harness connector.
  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Probe the power window switch voltage supply circuit of the harness connector with a test lamp that is connected to ground.
Does the test lamp illuminate?
Yes - Go to Step 4
NO - Go to Step 5
Connect the test lamp between the power window switch voltage supply circuit and the ground circuit of the harness connector.
Does the test lamp illuminate?
Go to Step 6
Go to Step 8

Test for an open or a short to ground in the power window switch voltage supply circuits of the driver window and front passenger window switches. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

That is a cylinder misfire code. Here is a list of thigns that can cause it, so you need to rule these out one at a time until you find the one that is causing it.

- Faulty spark plug (s)
- Faulty ignition coil (s)
- Clogged or faulty fuel injector (s)
- Intake air leak
- Fuel injectors harness is open or shorted
- Fuel Injectors circuit poor electrical connection
- Ignition coils harness is open or shorted

Off and on my lights go off and on on my 1974 buick when i put them on bright


On cars built before 2001 the headlight switch has a built-in circuit breaker for the headlight circuit. You are probably seeing the breaker cutting on and off.
The problem may be a weak breaker in the switch, or you could have a short in the wiring for the high beam circuit.

Obviously you have some type of short in the power seat electrical system. Try checking the ground side of each switch with a multimeter. you should not have any current on the ground side of your switch unless the switch is activated. And look for chaffing or short circuits in the wires
