Question about 2003 Ford Escape

How do I replace a fuel pump on a 2003 escape? Engine not getting enough fuel so when starting car, I get crank but cannot get engine to turn over. Perhaps the pump can wait if someone has other suggestions to check out - like fuel injectors or fuel filter? Thanks!

new fuel filter installed 2/4/09 with oil change. Since that date car has only been driven a little over 2000 miles.

Checked solution given 6/21 regarding fuel pump - cannot hear pump running. What;s next?? Thanks!

check for spark first. Remove a wire from a plug and hook another plug to it and ground it against the block and then crank to see if it sparks.

I doubt you have fuel pump issue.

Have someone turn key to "ON" while you listen at the fuel tank. You should hear the pump run for 5 seconds while it builds up pressure. The pump is in the tank. If it runs, it's not the pump.

Check to see if the inertia switch is tripped first. Read your owner manual for location and how to reset. Just push the button. It usually only trips in an accident to shut off the fule pump in case there is a leak.

here is how to replace the pump. It's good because you don't have to drop the tank!

  1. Relieve the fuel pressure. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 . (I disconnect inertia switch and crank engine for 10 seconds to revilve pressure).
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. (I don't do this myself). For additional information, refer to Section 414-01 .
  1. Lift the LH rear seat cushion.
  1. Position the carpet aside.
  1. Remove the screws and the fuel pump module access cover.
  1. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  1. Disconnect the fuel and vapor lines from the fuel tank. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 .

If a hissing sound is heard, wait until the condition stops before removing the fuel tank filler cap. If these precautions are not followed, fuel may spray and cause personal injury.
    Remove the gas cap.
  1. Using the special tool, remove the fuel pump module. (If you don't have tool, use a chisel or screwdriver and tap counterclockwise to rotate the ring).

  1. NOTE: Install a new fuel pump mounting gasket.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
    • Start the engine and visually inspect for leaks.

Fuel filter should be tried first.

First, check the ECM or PCM BAT fuse. If it's blown, replace it and see if it will run. Remove the fuel pump relay and check for voltage at the electrical connector while the key is cycled ON and OFF. One terminal should have voltage all the time with the key on, and the other for about 2 seconds with the key ON, or simply replace the relay with a known good one. If the fuel pump still doesn't activate, check to see if you have power at the fuel pump. If you do have voltage there, replace the fuel pump.

Where is the safety shut off for a 2003 Pont Aztek

There is no safety shut off switch .First off you say it still won't crank , I'm assuming you mean it won't start an run . If you turn the key to the start position an the engine spins ,that is referred to as the engine cranks . You have a no crank - no start or engine cranks - no start . A fuel pump would have nothing to do with a no - crank -no start problem . If the engine is cranking an not starting check for spark at spark plugs . Is there a security light lit on the instrument cluster ? a anti-theft system problem will cause a crank - no start problem . A short on the five volt reference circuit will cause a crank - no start . A shorted map sensor , shorted TP - throttle position sensor

  1. Sounds like the battery may not have enough power in it to start it.
  2. Turn lights on and try starting, if lights go out durin the start the battery may be dead.

Sometime tries to crank but cuts off as if it cant get gas to it

To clarify, the engine cranks but does not start, right ?
Have you checked fuel pressure with a gauge ?
And did you change the fuel filter ?

My 2003 Ford Escape is having problems starting - very intermittent - the engine will turn over, but not start when I turn the ignition. This happened initiallly about 6 months ago. I took it in for...

That is a false statement

You can put an Ampere Meter on it, when it is running

You can look at the motor running with an Oscilloscope

You can check Fuel Pressure & Fuel Volume

Your problem has nothing to do with cranking
Cranking is the starter turning over the motor

You have a no start condition, due to lack of fuel pressure

Now you see why I never recommend a dealer
Why would a professional tell you that stuff?

You have a complete fuel pump circuit with other items
that can be checked

You could install a new pump & hope that is the problem,
but if it took 6 months to come back I doubt it

Trying to turn car on and its cranking but it feels like its not getting fuel to the engine to turn on.

Could be the fuel pump relay. When the key in turned on, this relay causes the fuel pump to run for a very short time to build pressure in the fuel manifold which supplies the engine enough fuel for a cold start. Without this happening the engine would not get enough fuel to start. I'd replace the spark plugs too. Make sure the gap is set to spec.

2002 Ford Escape V6 XLT, problem w/ initial start in cold weather

Does the engine crank but just not start? Or... are you cycling the ignition switch without trying to crank the engine? Based on the information you have given, I would first guess that the fuel pump may be going out. I say this because when you first turn the key on the pump primes the engine with pressurized fuel. If the pump is getting old, it may take a few power cycles to get it going. You can test this theory by having somebody listen near the rear of the car while you turn the key on for the first time. The fuel pump make a faint, yet distinctive high pitch noise that can be heard when you turn the key on. Try that first. Next thing you would try is checking the relays for proper function... starting with the fuel pump relay. Good luck.
