Question about 1992 Lincoln Continental

Car will not start. We have spark and fuel pressure but the engine will not fire.

    check to see if you have an injector pulse. you can do this with an injector test light at each injector connector. when it cranks over, does it crank evenly or like it's uneven from fast to slow? it could then be cam timing. the processor is working if you have fuel pressure.

Its either not getting fuel to the engine or your spark plugs are not firing check your fuel pressure, fuel pump and fuel filter, also test your spark plugs, leads, distributor cap etc, etc.

1988 toyota camry 2.0 turns over but won't start. Car has been driving like a champ and one morning wouldn't start. Turns over fine but won't fire. Tested for spark by removing spark plugs...


Fuel pressure at idle is normally 30-35psi. Start by taking the gas cap off, and putting it back on. That will De-pressurize the fuel system. Also, make sure you have gas in the car. I have seen gauges on these cars read wrong. I hope this helps.

2000 Eclipse GT turns over but doesn't start. Fires once in a while but won't run. Had timing belt replaced.


Hi, if the car turn over, and it don't start. Then it is like the engine don't get fuel. Or bad a spark plugs. Most common problem is the fuel pump going bad.

It could also be a bad fuse, but a easy way to check if the fuel pump is ok is to have someone stand at the back of the car when you turn the ignition. The fuel pump should make a buzzing sound for a few seconds. And if you don't start the car right away the fuel pump will stop.

If you don't hear any buzzing from the fuel pump/fuel tank then you have a bad fuel pump............

My car will not start at all


There are two types of problem. 1)No start at all. 2)The other problem is car turns over but do not start. ------------- No start at all;----------May be the battery of your car is got completely drained. sometimes by mistake any of the car lights or ac or any battery consuming accessory remains on.And due to this battery gets completely drained and due to no voltage in battery the car does not start.In some cases the car does not gets turned off.If there is a problem in ignition switch circuit and this also drains the battery.Get the car battery voltage checked.It should be 12 volt if the battery is properly charged.This will let you know what is the problem .Also check the battery connections if its got loose then this can happen. ---------------- The other problem is car turns over but do not start.:----------Engine cranks normally, but it does not fire:

You turn the key to start and hear the starter motor crank the engine, but when you release the key, the cranking stops and there is silence. This means that the battery and starting motor are working properly, but the engine is not firing. If you continue cranking the engine over in this way, the battery will eventually run down and will need to be recharged, but the battery and starter are not the cause of your problem.
There are a number of causes for this type of no-start condition, the most common being that you are simply out of gas. Assuming that you have fuel in the tank, you will need to go through a series of tests to determine what is causing the problem. The testing procedure is as follows:---

Spark:---------An easy way to test for spark is with an inexpensive spark tester. This is a device that is readily available at most auto supply stores. You use it by simply holding it next to a spark plug wire. If you see the neon lamp flashing while someone cranks the engine, then you have spark and should move on to checking for fuel. If there is no spark, or a very weak spark, you will have to replace the spark plug or the coil pack.It has to be checked.

Fuel:
First step here is to listen for the fuel pump running inside the gas tank. When you turn the key to run, you should easily hear the pump come on, run for a few seconds to build fuel pressure, then turn off. If you do not hear it, it could mean that the fuel pump or circuitry is bad. (Fuel pump failure is a common problem).

Fuel injected cars are very sensitive to proper fuel pressure. If the pressure is off, even by a few pounds, it will cause noticeable performance problems, or a no-start condition. To check for proper fuel pressure, you will need a fuel pressure gauge that is suitable for your type of system.Or you can also get the fuel pressure tested at local car garage,If fuel pressure is low then its a fuel pump and fuel filter related problem.

Compression:

If you know that you have spark and fuel, the next step is to check for compression. For this, you will need a mechanic's grade compression tester that will screw into a spark plug hole. You will need to remove the spark plugs and use the compression tester to test the compression on each cylinder. If the compression is very low on all cylinders, that is a sure sign that the timing belt (or timing chain depending on the engine) has failed and will have to be replaced.

In addition to the battery voltage to "turn the engine over"...ignition requires spark and gas. so first check the battery voltage with meter.it should show 12 volts.If the battery is proper and fully charged you get 12 volts.

A car that cranks over but doesn't start or does not fire, in many cases will be due to a bad fuel pump, a broken timing belt, an inoperative cam sensor or crank sensor. Also this problems are related to faulty spark plug. Check the spark at spark plugs when you start the car. Do you notice any spark. Actually you should see. If in case there is no spark then it's a spark plug problem. Also the coil pack gives power to spark plug. So check the voltage at coil pack. It will show 12 volt.If there is no voltage noticed at coil pack then its faulty coil pack that has to be replaced.If all the possible options checked out ok then check the car starter. The starter gets power from battery to start the care. If the starter is faulty then it will not let the car to start. Also check and confirm that there is fuel in the car. If its very low fuel then in some cases this causes the problem. Also check and confirm that fuel pump is functioning properly and the fuel filter is not clogged. One of the easiest ways to check for a fuel pump related problem is to spray a little starting fluid into the air intake while trying to start the car. If the car starts momentarily, then there's a good chance the fuel pump is not working or the car is out of gas. You can also listen for the fuel pump's humming sound when the key is first turned on. Also if a inoperative fuel pump is suspected, a good technician will always check to verify there is power and ground being supplied to the pump, to eliminate the possibility of a bad relay or electrical issue. Fuel pressure can be checked with a pressure gauge and if there is pressure, pulse can be checked at the fuel injectors in several ways including the most common, with the use of noid lights. Wont start, no spark anywhere


Check the spark, remove the fuse to the fuel pump and remove one of the spark plugs. Connect the plug to its lead and position it well away from the engine against the truck frame (do not hold it) and turn the engine over, check the spark. If no spark it most probably a faulty coil. Check the impedance of the spark plug leads and replace any that are much higher than the rest. My guess is that you have spark but no fuel, What?... OK this is what I think is wrong. Your pump is fine when at position 2 on the ignition switch however when you switch to position three to fire the engine the power to the fuel pump is momentarily disconnected. A leaking fuel pressure regulator or injector would drop the pressure in the fuel line and at the same time flood the engine making it impossible to start. Once you start the engine with ether the ignition is back to position 2 and the pump can make good any loss in pressure but because the intake mix is rich this will cause the engine to run rich too. A good fuel system is capable of delivering 40 - 50PSI of fuel pressure and when switched off up to 90% of this pressure should be maintained for about 5 minutes, if it cannot check out the fuel pressure regulator and injectors. The fuel pipe should be capable of filling a pint pot in about 15 seconds, if it cannot check out the fuel filter is clogged.

you need to determine if you have spark at plugs while turning the engine over,or if you don't have enough fuel pressure to fire it up,you will need at least 55psi of fuel pressure at the fuel rail to start
