Compressor not turning in '01 Jetta

It seems like the clutch isn't getting enough power. We checked the power but didn't hear the ''click''..... any advice?

check for excessive power draw from compressor clutch, and blower motor, use a volt meter to check for power drop, other possibility draw on ecm it controls all engine functions

Relays click when interior fan is on


Often the click which can be heard when the A.C. kicks in is the clutch on the A.C. compressor. Be sure that it isn't just this sound which you are hearing.
Also check the operation of the idle control valve which is supposed to raise the engine revs to compensate for heavy power drain. If this isn't working correctly, then this would explain the lights dimming under low revs.

You seem mechanically inclined, so I want you to try this before you do anything else; let's decern whether or not the clutch is any good .

I want you to unplug the the plug that plugs into the compressor . Just in case there is a possible short somewhere, clip the wire's to the plug, but leave enough wire to reconnect them back . Attach two pieces of wire to the wire's on the plug that you just clipped, making them long enough to reach the battery . Plug the plug back into the compressor . After skinning the wire's on the other end, touch one to the positive (+) side of the battery, and the other to the negative (-) side of the battery . When you do this, you should hear a click from the clutch of the compressor, if you don't then the clutch is bad, if you do; then you are low on freon, your low pressor swith is bad, or you have wiring problem's .

1998 Jetta TDI compressor goes on--full charge, but no cold air-


possibly a bad expansion valve/orifice tube. or the blower switch isn't working properly. I mean, not moving the blender door correctly, not letting air flow through the A/C evaporator!

Replaced the ac compressor but now no power to compressor but have power to low and high pressure switches. checked relay under hood, relay and fuse in cabin. what am i missing?


Put a jump wire in the high pressure switch plug. If the compressor works. replace the high pressure switch. Let me know and we can go from there.

COMPRESSOR CLUTCH NOT GETTING POWER? COULD IT BE THE RELAY ?


First item to check is if the refrigerant has enough pressure. Low levels of fluid will damage the compressor, so the system protects itself by not allowing the compressor to operate. (It cuts out the voltage to the relay/ clutch. If the pressure checks out ok, then check the relay and associated wiring.
As a last option check if the clutch is working. Do this WITH THE VEHICLE TURNED OFF, by applying 12 volts directly from the battery to the clutch terminal. You should hear a loud click if the clutch is working alright.

Seems to have no power going to a.c. compressor


Compressor uses a clutch that is activated electrically by a relay. When you turn on the A/C, you should hear the clutch engage and pull power from the engine. If the clutch is not engaging, there may be several reasons:
wiring problem
HVAC switch failure
relay failure
compressor clutch failure
low refrigerant level

There is a sensor that checks the system return pressure and will not allow the clutch to engage if the refrigerant level is too low.

1999 gran prix a/c is blowing hot air, but was working last year. Put in freon and still does not cool


first turn the ac off and then start the engine. you may want to lift the hood so you can hear the next step better. turn on the ac and within a couple seconds not more than 5 or so you should hear a click sound. This is the ac clutch engaging. if you don't hear a click you can double check the compressor has engaged by looking to see that the center of the ac compressor is turning with the outer pulley. if it is not most likely you don't have enough refrigerant in the system. i would suggest getting an ac pressure tester they are fairly inexpensive but this will tell you for certain if you have enough refrigerant or not.

THE AIR CONDITIONING IN MY 2000 JETTA VR6 JUST STOPPED WORKING, NO WARNING. I HAD TWO DIFFERANT MECHANICS LOOK AT IT. THEY SAID THAT THE COMPRESSOR IS NOT GETTING ANY VOLTAGE, BUT WHEN THEY JUMP VOLTAGE TO THE COMPRESSOR IT STILL WILL NOT START. THEY SAID THE COMPRESSOR SEEMS TO BE OKAY. ANY SUGGESTIONS
