Question about 2001 Volvo S40

1 Answer

I have just bought my 8th Volvo, I love the car and it drives like a dream as usual but on buying the 2001 S40 I bought a sat nav, not realising charging it would be a problem with no 12 V Socket in the ashtray, am I being stupid and there is another socket or can I buy one or shall I just send my sat nav back? Thank you in advance, James

I have a sat nav that normally charges out of the cigarette lighter 12 v socket but there is not a 12 v socket I can find on the UK model but I suppose the US edition came complete with a storming norman invasion edition?

Thanks for that, it tells me it can be done but I am a complete doofus when it comes to DIY and mechanics, is it easy to do and where would it go?

american cars don't have these problems since we invented sat nav systems to wage war.

Just buy a cigarette lighter socket and install it yourself.
Supply it from the vehicle +12V accessory power; don't forget to also connect 0V (ground) to the socket metal frame.
Accessory power is normaly used on the vehicle to power heater fans, radios etc.

Its a very straight forward installation for any competent auto elec.

Place the socket in any convenient unobtrusive location, mounted on a small sub bracket if necessary. There may even be unused accessory wiring (for optional OEM equipment) in the existing cable looms that could be utilised.

What you may not realise, perhaps, is that the S40 is based on the same platform as the Ford Focus. On the positive side, that means you’ll have plenty of fun driving it, but at the same time, the S40 can look like a pretty expensive buy.

2001 Volvo S40 missing key/remote

You car has an integrated key and remote.

There is a software that needs to be downloaded to the car. When the remote is purchased at the dealer it comes in a plastic package. That plastic package has a sticker on it. The sticker contains id codes.

There are two codes one is 16 digits/letters and the second one is 8 digits/letters.

Without this sticker the dealership can not program the remote/key to the car. If you buy a key elsewhere, make sure it has the codes included.

Unfortunately you cannot program a remote yourself.
