Question about 2000 Lincoln Continental

Problems controlling speed and stopping

I was driving on i95 when the car continued to speed up to 90 when I tried applying the brake it would only go down to 60 until I was able to get off 95 and switch to neutral this has happened twice and two garages were unable to find a definite reason for this one of them was a lincoln dealership now I'm afraid to drive it?

Are you trying to get out of a speeding ticket?

Do you use cruise control? When you switched to neutral did the engine
run wide open? It is a weird problem for sure. Next time - get
into the right lanes and use the ignition key to shut down the engine
and pull over. Any check engine lights. Get the codes checked for
    problems.

Run away 2001 Grand Am

Brake switch is designed to shut cruise off when brake pedal applied, sounds like a defective brake switch, because when she applied the brakes it's supposed to cut power to cruise module, so either that is problem or your throttle cable had iced up and or both

Any time you get ANY MIL Lamps or Check Lamps
on the dash of any vehicle,it does not matter what the
problems may be

You never continue to drive for days or weeks or
just want the lights to go away

You can go to the parts store and have it checked
for codes.
Then what? Your not familair with OBD Vehicles
Systems or have the ability to do your own repairs

So you need to just go to a repair shop

You Have an ABS Braking System problem or
system failure somewhere.

Abs, brake won't go off, fluid full, just changed rear rotors and pads and rear brake line. also, trac light flashes on and off. how do i reset this now that it is fixed? car is a 2002 lexus is300

The ABS system and TRAC system are very similar. Signals from the speed sensors in the wheel hubs and one on the output shaft of the transmission are checked against each other. If when you apply the brake a wheel is detected as running much slower than the others brake fluid is relieved from this wheel to stop it skidding. Likewise when you accelerate the speed sensors detect a wheel speeding up faster than the rest and the brake is applied to it to gain traction control. So you can see that the speed sensor operation and their signals are central to both ABS and TRAC. If you have a problem with one then you invariably have a problem with the other. You need to check that the speed sensors to the wheel hubs are intact, that the connections are good and that the wiring has continuity. Also check the speed sensor on the side of the output shaft on the transmission casing, the connection and continuity. If any part is loose this will be enough to upset the complete system.

2004 ford freestar...I have a VERY high pitch noise coming from the drivers side wheel area. Took it to Midas and they checked everything..my calipers, rotors, bearings, brakes (still had 90%), CV...

Get a spray can of Brake disc quiet from Advanced Auto and coat the disc let set for one hour then take out and drive at the same time rotate your tires if the noise comes from a different wheel after rotating then it is your tire if it continues from your drivers side then your caliper needs to be removed and readjusted because the piston is not fully depressing.

Clunk when shifting car into drive from park 1990 ford taurus.

If the front end vibrates when you put the brakes on it could be a few different problems. Your need to check the brakes, they may be worn. if the back brakes are worn your front brakes are doing all the stopping. if your brakes are fine then you are looking at the front control arms or the upper and lower ball joints. You can take your car to a brake and front end shop for a free estimate. You are probably looking at about 400 to 1200 dollars.
I hope this helps you out

TRACTION CONTROL.

that is what it is desgined to do - reduce acceleration and apply the brakes intermittently when the wheels spin. You have a switch you cn push to disable it. You need to disable each time you start car. See owner manual.

06-10: Traction Control 1996 Contour, Mystique Workshop Manual
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Traction Control System The optional traction control system is designed to control wheel spin when accelerating on slippery or loose surfaces. Traction control system is available only with anti-lock brakes. The traction control system includes the following components:
  • Hydraulic control unit.
  • Throttle control actuator (9N825).
  • Traction control switch.
  • Traction control warning indicator.
  • Front brake anti-lock sensor (2C204).
  • Rear brake anti-lock sensor (2C190).
The traction control system operates as follows:
  • System functions by transferring torque from the spinning wheel to the wheel with the most traction.
  • This is achieved by applying the brake at the spinning wheel through the hydraulic control unit or reducing the throttle opening.
  • Traction control braking and throttle control occur at vehicle speeds up to 50 km/h (30 mph).
  • At vehicle speeds above 50 km/h (30 mph), only throttle limiting control is used.
  • If speed control is operating when traction control system engages the traction control system will disengage speed control through the use of a speed control relay. This action is the same as applying the brake pedal with speed control engaged.
1996 contour
Traction Control Switch The traction control switch is located on the instrument panel, left of the steering column.

1996 GMC K2500, 5.7 eng, auto trans. Sometimes when you let off the throttle and apply the brake the engine will die or try to die. I had the a/c serviced and while idleing the engine suddenly stopped,...

You need to clean the idle speed control valve and the throttle valve, they are most likely sludged up, use carb spray, do it with the enginge at high idle speed, after you are done disconnect the batt. for 5 min. and the reconnect, drive a few miles and your problem should go away.
