Apparently at least two of the people responding have never looked under the hood of this car... The transmission fluid tank is a pain in the *** to get at, and there is no dipstick, if you regularly take your car for "check ups" which you should, or get the oil changed at your dealer or local body shop, they will check it for you and add fluid if it's needed. Are you having a problem with the transmission??

My GA doesn't have a dipstick. GM dealer says that it is a sealed unit and doesn't have to be changed until 100K mi. If it doesn't leak, no need to check. I found a plug where the dipstick is supposed to be. Another great GM cost saver (for them) and $ generator.

Transmission fluid hot (drive vehicle a couple of miles before checking), vehicle on a level grade, engine idling in "park". The trans dipstick will have marks for fluid level, some even mark "cold" level and "hot" level. Marks indicate adding in pints, not quarts.

Should be a trans dip stick that is red in color. looks kindof like a oil dipstick but it will be close to the fire wall. this is assuming it is an automatic.

Where is the dipstick to check the transmission fluid on a 1999 pontiac grand am 4 cyclinder engine

There should be a long diptick which reached to the bottom of the engine block, this is motor oil. The transmission dipstick is very long as well, and transmission fluid is red.

How much transmission fluid does a 1999 Grand Prix once I drop the pan and change the filter? Also, what kind of transmission fliud works best? Thanks

Transmission fluid does not have to deal with nearly the number of problems engine oil has to, with heat, water, acids, grit, etc., so it is not at all critical. In the old days, Ford always had a different fluid because they used different material for seals. But these days the all the fluids sold are great.

As to how much, that depends. There will only be about 4 quarts in the pan and transmission, but the total is more than twice that, and it can very anywhere in between, depending on how much fluid drains down from the torque convertor. It has a little flap that is supposed to stop drainage, but it always leaks down slowly anyhow. So there is never any set amount. You just have to estimate how much came out, put that much in to start, and keep checking and adding, with the engine running.

Where would i check the trans fluid on a 99 grand am with a 2.4 quad cam

Believe it or not, your transmission is a closed case transmission. You have a plug just above the drain plug on the transmission that you remove to check the fluid level. This is also where you service it. It is like servicing a differential on a truck. Call a transmission shop to verify. I guarantee you this is the only way how.

You have to pump fluid in until it seeps out.

Mamad needs to know how to check transmission fluid in a 1999 pontiac grand am se and how to change it.

I assume you mean an automatic transmission. The dipstick should be to the right rear of the engine compartment (facing the car). There should be directions on how to check the fluid level stamped on the dipstick. To change the filter and fluid, you need a large drain pan and a pair of ramps. Start loosening the drain pan bolts, loosening more on the lower side of the pan. As the gasket starts to come loose the fluid should start poring out. Once you have the pan off, examine the pan and look for large bits of metal or chunks of clutch in the bottom of the pan (sooty looking deposits are normal), clean the pan, clean off the gasket surface, install the new filter, put the new gasket on the pan and start inserting the bolts through the pan lip and gasket. Put the pan back in place and start all of the bolts. Tighten all until they are finger tight, make sure the gasket has not shifted, then start tightening with a wrench. Fill the transmission with the recommended fluid (probably Dexron III or Mercon) and check the level. Do not overfill as the transmission will not shift properly.

Transmission fliud

To check the trans fluid you have to have car on a lift or over a pit (like at oil change place) so it is level.

On the lower pass. side of trans. right near the rt. front drive axle there is a small plug (takes 7/16" wrench) Pull plug and fuild should run out W/ engine hot and running.

If you need to add there is a red cap on the driver side top of the trans right at the back of the engine. Unscrew cap and fill thru small hole.
