Question about 1991 Honda Civic

Broke thermostat housing

I change thermostat, when i tightened the 2 screws down i cracked the housing that the screws....screwed into! trying tfind one.

and find the right part to replace this...what is it called, where can i find a replacement part?

Fan does not run when stop car over haets


Try changing temperature sending unit sometimes its located in radiator . Just below radiator cap you will see wires.check connections on fan. check selenoid in electrical panals understand hood grey or black relays. Cover will say fan one fan 2 . if not that try changing
your thermostat check fluids. warm car up an open blender screw on thermostat housing. Tighten when all air is bled out.

Engine coolant leak


There are no coolant lines etc running on the lower part of the engine.Usually water will leak from above and run down finally dripping from under the engine. Coolant will not leak from the "engine" it leaks from a hose or thermostat housing.


Start from the top and work down. Check each hose by feeling with your hand. Look for a wet spot. wipe the hose with a cloth to clean if necessary. If you think you found it dry the area and check again.Sometimes you need to move the hose around to open a small tear and expose the leak source.

Tip: park overnight on a piece of cardboard. Look for the spot where it is dripping. This will give you and idea where to look.

If a hose leaks around a clamp tighten the clamp. Screw clamps can be tightened. The spring style can not. Once moved the spring type often leak. If moved try moving to the exact position it was in using the impression left on the pipe. I could suggest though that your replace it with a screw type clamp.

If you find a torn hose you may be able to disconnect, cut the end and reattach. If too short replace.

Check where each hose connects to the engine. This will be the thermostat housing and the heater supply line. If a housing is leaking try gently tightening (careful they crack). Or replace the gasket. Use a new gasket do not just use gasket sealer.

Check at the radiator. There will be a heat sensor there. They screw into the radiator. If it is leaking try to gently tighten (take care you can break it). If that does not work remove the sensor and put Teflon tape on the threads. That should do it.

If you don't see a leak at all. Start the engine and run. This will build pressure in the cooling system. Look for leak using the same process. Careful as the engine is hot.

Replacing 1987 Chevy Nova Thermostat


Look for a hose extending from the top of the radiator to a round housing atop the engine. Removal of the housing cap screws will reveal the thermostat. Note the mounting orientation of the thermostat to avoid installing the replacement upside down. Remove the old thermostat and gasket. You may have to scrape the old gasket off. Place the replacement gasket and thermostat in position and reinstall the housing cap screws and tighten securely. Start your Chevy and check for leaks..

2002 chevy malibu need to replace thermostat housing


to remove the hose undo the clamp.
twist hose till it comes loose then pull off neck.
remove 2 screws and tap off old part.
clean up the seat where new part goes to prevent leaks.
apply hi temp silicone to both sides of gasket then put gasket in place.
make sure the bolt holes are lined up and then set new part in place
add screws then tighten evenly. do not over tighten or the new part could break. add antifreeze

How replace the thermostat


First drain some of the anti freeze,then follow top radiator hose to thermostat housing,remove hose from housing,unloosen clamp,then remove 2 bolts on housing and pry off,then scrap both ends,remove old gasket and silicone,don't scrape to hard and scar metal.install thermostat with spring toward engine and jiggler up,use thermostat silicone on both surfaces,then install gasket and thermostat cover then tighten screws,install hose,tighten clamp,add antifreeze.check your overflow container and add if low.Usually when you install new thermostat,change anti freeze and radiator cap.

Broken thermostat housing bolt


You'll probably have to drill out the bolt. Very carefully.
If there is any part of the bolt sticking out you may be able to use vise grips.

Thermostat broken stud


You can replace it. There are several types of screw extractors out there. They usually come with a drill bit for the correct size extractor. You will need to find out what size stud it is. Once you have determined that chose the appropriate size drill bit and extractor. Lowes or home depot carry them. Drill into the center of the broken stud. Be careful not to drill too deep as you might damage the thermostat housing. Once you have drill into the stud use the extractor to remove the broken stud. Napa auto parts or autozone should carry the stud size and length that you need. Purchase a stud and 2 plain nuts that match the thread of the stud. The nuts will be used to install the stud. Thread The stud into the thermostat housing. Once it is tight by hand stop. Thread the first plain nut onto the stud far enough so that you can get the second nut onto the stud and have a thread or two sticking out of the second nut. Once the two nuts are on the stud hold the first nut with a wrench and tighten the second nut tight against it. This will allow you to finish installing the stud. Once the nuts are tightened together, use a wrench (on the second nut only) to run the stud down into the thermostat housing. Do not overtighten the stud as you may crack the housing. Run the stud down into the housing unit the stud is the same height as the existing stud. Then use a wrench to hold the second nut and loosen the fist nut away from the second nut. Remove both nuts from the stud. You stud is now installed and you can reinstall the thermostat. If you have any questions you can email me at dplumb1@me.com Good luck

  3. Pull the lamp assembly slightly forward to access the electrical connection.
  4. Disconnect the forward lamp harness main electrical connector from the headlamp harness.

Replace t-stat on 3400


Hello Doug.
Be prepared to have lots of patience on this one. Tricky to do and have some good tools.A 10mm ratchet wrench is nice to have on this too.
Remove the air cleaner and duct pipe. The exhaust crossover pipe is in the way but it will come out of there without removing it.
Drain your cooling system down to below the level of the thermostat housing.
Now comes the fun part. Remove the clamp on the housing and remove the 2 bolts holding down the housing. Make sure at this point your tools are capable of removing the bolts before loosening.
After removal clean up the surfaces. I use some weatherstrip adhesive to tack the thermostat and gasket to the housing normally but in this case you need to put the thermostat in the block first and then slide the housing in. You need to be cautious here as the thermostat can slide out of position and if so you tighten the housing it will crack it.
After you get it together and refill the system the next thing to get done is to get the air out of the cooling system.
There are some air bleed screws one on the housing and I think there is another one on the engine. Open these as you refill to allow air to escape, close when coolant comes out. Run for a couple minutes, shut off, and crack them slightly again, top up. Run to operating temperature, let it cool again and check your levels.
