Question about 1997 Jeep Wrangler

1 Answer

Jeep Wrangerl 2001 will not start every time. Gauges start to dance and go crazy. When I turn light switch on and off everything works fine. Went to Sears they checked battery said it was good, they do not think it is the alternator either.

Jeep will not start unless we pop the clutch. The lights work, but the engine won't turn over. When we get it started and drive, everything works fine and gauges look fine. Turn it off, won't start...

sounds like a starter take a test light touch it to the smaller stud on the starter have someone turn the key to start the car the test light should light with the key if starter does not work its bad . if the light does not light then its the ignition switch on the steering column = no power to starter

look verycarfully at the battery terminals.
make sure the cable that goes in to the terminal is nice and tight in there.

Guages when crazy. Now won't even try to start.

You likely have it repaired by now but it sounds like a classic case of oxidized battery or cable connection (sometimes mis-diagnosed as bad battery but cured with new (clean) battery)

Won't start sometimes

Hmm, sounds like starter. Next time it will not start, don't hold the key for almost a minute. Try turning the key several times if no luck, grabb a hammer and LIGHTLY tap on starter. If it turns over normally then, starter is going out.
