normally , there is a drain vave at the bottom of your radiator on your car, and a person should wait till a cars cooling system is cool enough to drain, you can do this by opening up the drain valve and letting the antifreeze run into a safe container, [and flushing radiator out if you choose to do so,] but aftewards , make sure drain valve is closed, and you can refill the cooling system with the proper type of anti freeze that your cars manufacture calls for, afterwards, start car up and wait till thermostat opens, [ you can tell by your temperature gage,] and add additional antifreeze if needed, but make sure car does not over heat while running, if so shut it off and wait till it cools down, could be a air pocket in the system, will have to wait later to restart to allow air pocket to be relieved from system.

1999 olds silhouette heat is warm when running but the gets cooler when idling also heater hoses have no pressure on them. I have checked coolant level added some. Checked for air in cooling system by...


The heater core could be clogged. If your antifreeze is orange , then it is Dexcool antifreeze which causes slime and sludge to build up in the cooling system. It can clog a heater core. My suggestion would be to drain and flush the entire cooling system with Prestone Super Flush. Put in a new thermostat while your at it. Refill the cooling system with a green antifreeze that is labeled compatible with aluminum engine parts and radiators.Do Not refill with Dexcool antifreeze.

I have a 2002 buick century custom. Apparently there is a problem with the antifreeze that was used in these vehicles. What do I need to do to repair the damage caused by this problem


You need to drain the old antifreeze and flush the entire cooling system with a commercial product such as Prestone Super Flush. After flushing according to the directions on the product you will want to fill the cooling sysstem with plain water and let it circulate through the system. Drain the system again and repeat the process until the water is clear of any antifreeze. Refill the system with the proper mixture of antifreeze. Make sure you use a quality antifreeze that is compatible with your make and model of car. The auto parts store personnel can help you select the right antifreeze. DO NOT refill it with Dexcool. That is the antifreeze that GM put in originally that is causing the problems. Dexcool not only forms a gummy sludge in the cooling system, it also attacks certain gasket materials and causes coolant to leak into the engine. Hopefully, this hasn't happened yet.

Coolant level ok no leaks new 195 deg. thermostat still very little heat from heater defective heater core?


I am assuming your vehicle has the pink antifreeze called Dexcool. This is the recommended coolant for all late model GM cars and trucks. This coolant tends to form a pasty sludge in the cooling system which can lead to overheating and/or plugged up heater core. Try flushing the cooling system with a good aftermarket product such as prestone radiator flush. First thing to do is drain all the pink coolant, then add the radiator flush and fill with plain water. Run the engine according to directions on the flush container. Drain the radiator again and refill with plain water. Run the engine for a few minutes and drain again. Keep repeating this until all the pink antifreeze has been eliminated. Fill the system with 2 gallons of green antifreeze. Make sure the antifreeze container says it is compatible with aluminum engine parts. Hope this helps. If it does, then you won't have to replace the heater core.

Check Antifreeze/coolant level in reservoir. Check motor oil level.

Have cooling system checked. Drain, flush, fill with proper antifreeze. Change the thermostat as well.

Best way to change coolant in 2003 sierra


With engine cold, remove radiator cap. At bottom of radiator on left side (as you stand in fronof truck), there is a plastic drain plug that screws into the radiator. This plug does not look like a bottle cap, rather it looks like a large, raised tab. Turn counterclockwise to remove. Have a large pan under the truck at this location, or have the truck parked on the grass. Allow to drain completely. Dispose of the old antifreeze and do let children or pets drink it; it is deadly poison. If you want to do this right, replace the plug, refill the radiator with water only, replace the radiator cap, start engine and let run until opwerating temperature is reached (about 20 minutes), then turn engine off, let cool completely, and repeat the drain procedure. This will more thoroughly remove the old antifreeze from the system. Now refill the radiator with the proper mixture of new antifreeze and water, run engine to proper operating temperature. turn off engine and let cool completely. Add additional water and antifreeze into the coolant overflow bottle if necessary. After changing antifreeze, you may need to add more again after couple of days.

How do you change antfreeze


Dude you should have a drain plug on th bottom of the radiator. Remove and drain it out, run water through the system for a good ten minutes. Then reinstall drain plug and fill your cooling system with the correct antifreeze. You fill canister should be on the left side of the car and you should use GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL or Havoline DEX-COOL coolant.

I have a 98 cavalier. it runs hot after engine is runnung for a while. the fan comes on and helps it a bit but not enough. and the air from the heater inside never gets warm , where do i start? thx


It sounds like you need to service your cooling system. The cooling system may need to be flushed out due to dirty from corrosion. A sign of no heat in the heater and the engine is hot is low on antifreeze in the system. Check the antifreeze level first and add water just to get around to buy the things you need to service the cooling system. Buy antifreeze and a thermostat, drain the old antifreeze and replace the thermostat. Add new antifreeze with a 50/50 mix solution water/antifreeze. Too much antifreeze will gel and the cooling system will still run hot and to much water will boil over. Good luck. Keep me posted be glad to help.

I NEED TO FLUSH THE INTERCOOLER SYSTEM OUT AND REPLACE THE COOLANT, WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO DO THIS?


  1. Start with a stone cold engine

  2. Open the radiator cap

  3. Open the radiator drain plug and let out as much coolant as will drain';

  4. Replace drain plug and refill the sytem with distilled water

  5. Run the engine for for few minutes until it is warm (not hot);

  6. Repeat steps #3, #4 and #5 until you've effectively replace all of the coolant with distilled water. You'll know your finished draining the system when only clear water drains out.

  7. Drain the system one last time (now only residual distilled water should be in your cooling system);

  8. **** out all the coolant in the overflow tank (I use a Turkey baster or a huge syringe with a short length of rubber tubing.)

  9. Replace the radiator drain plug.

  10. Add undiluted anti-freeze to the system;

  11. Run the engine to mix the distilled water already in the cooling system with the newly added antifreeze.

  12. Check the antifreeze/water concentration with a tester.

  13. Over the next few days, adjust to the desired antifreeze/water mixture over the next several days. You'll likely have to **** out a little coolant mixture from the fill cap to create room for either the distilled water or the anit-freeze you'll be adding to adjust to the desired concentration. Sometimes I adjust by adding either water or antifreeze to the coolant- overflow tank which utimately mixes with the engine coolant;

  14. Don't forget to add collant and/or water to the coolant overflow tank.

The major reason for using dex-cool is that antifreeze is often neglected as a service item. If neglected, it becomes acidic over time which is particularly important with the use of aluminium in most major components which are served by antifreeze. Acid causes etching and premature failure of gaskets and permanent damage to blocks, heads and especially the radiator and heater core, which are not vert thick to begin with.
Since "normal" antifreeze acidifies faster than does dex-cool, mixing both together causes a change in breakdown rate...the more "normal" coolant added, the faster it breaks down.
Both coolants do not react chemically with each other and therefore retain the same ability to prevent boil over and freezing.
In reality, normal coolant can be used with little or no effect on components, provided that you change it every year. (that's where the EPA gets involved) They do not want people dumping this stuff into the ground, so they push for extended service intervals. Since dex cool has a longer service life, that's what they want you to use.
As far as how you chasnge the coolant, it is always a good idea to flush system during a change, regardless of antifreeze type. This removes solid particles which can plug radiator core. Radiators are much smaller than their older counterparts. Loss of even a small portion of cooling area can cause overheating. Engine running temps are also higher than older vehicles (heat=power output). Therefore most systems have a much smaller margin of error than before. What I find though is that regular flushing can also be bad for the system as the chems eat away at metal components in order to clean. I recommend regualr or dex cool antifreeze systems be flushed with water only, once a year, but retaining what you removed and filtering it through a coffee filter, using it during the year to "top off" the system. To retain effectiveness of coolant, use a hydrometer to check concentration, adding new coolant to bring reading to proper protection level.Then, every three years, do a complete chem flush and change entire batch. This keeps your system clean and the epa happy!
