Idle fine but look under inlet manifold for a valve that has water pipes running into it ,might not have any though as models do vary from europe to america

underneath the inlet manifold ,a connection with two water pipes and a connection from the front part of the foreward of the butterfly .but it might not have one depending on the model .this is a wax type operated valve that allows air from the air filter side of the butterfly to the engine side .Failing which look for another temperature sensor near to the water temperature ,this one controls the auto choke but thinking about it this would only cause starting problems ,better still try cleaning the air flow control sensor .The biggest problem i have here is different units used between models for american market .Compared with europeon models some USA models are completely different sorry i couldnt be of more help

The problem is the rubber vibration isolation engine mounts are hard from the engine heat. Replace all the engine mounts and the transmission mount.

I am thinking about buying a used 1996 VW Jetta, with 160k miles, but the head gasket is broken, would it be worth buying or should I look elsewhere?

This is an impossible question! You don't say if it's diesel or gas, general condition, or what the price is! Give a guy a break won't you!

Considering buying one with 160k on it & needs a new clutch. Wonder how many miles we can expect out of it.

Depends on how well it was taken care of.
It is easy to get parts for and work on, so you could keep it running probably as long as you cared to.
The weakest link in cars are the automatic transmissions, so you don't have to worry about that.
The engine is probably going to get tired around 220k miles, but even that can easily be replaced with a salvage one for about $1500.
At least you know the clutch should be good for another 160k.
Brakes last about every 90k, and cost about $250.
CV joints and axles go about every 150K and cost about $300.
It depends on finding good mechanics that you trust more than anything else.

Rough idle in park occasionally and while driving seems to shutter has stalled a few times

Your ignition coil might be bad. If it is happening after it rains, check the distributor for moisture. My ignition coil went bad on my 98 jetta.

If you replace the ignition coil, it runs rough for a little bit and it needs to sync. Just drive it around a little bit and it should steady out. If it doesn't take it to a mechanic.

Good luck.

2006 Jetta TDI Stalls in gear

These little engines(although very good little engines)have a problem with carbon build up in the intake manifold. It builds up so bad it begins to choke the engine off. The only solution is to remove the intake and soak with a good solvent over night and will generally take you a good couple of hours to clean out to get to "like new" again. Once this is accomplished, it's like driving your car new again!!

Change the fuel filter, check the fuel pressure, then pull the tank and replace the pump if the pressure is below spec.
