Question about 1996 Mercury Mystique

1 Answer

Car randomly loses power and speed when driving, but remains on

When driving the car, it will lose power and start loosing speed quick. The car remains on and unresponsive to the gas until it is floored. Up to the point of the pedal being floored the RPM's and speed do not change whatsoever. Once it is floored, it gets a huge leap in RPM'S and surges forward with alot of power and that is the only way to increase speed when this loss of power occurs.

Stopping the car, turning it off and then on corrects the problem.
It has never done it twice in one trip, or one time after another.
It is completely random, has happened at different speeds while cruising.
Happens about once a week, or every two weeks.

I have the same problem! Car is at ford dealership now. I'm figuring a bad fuel filter, clogged catalytic converter, heck, it could even be that the spark plugs need changing. Hoping for something minor! Will write what my problem is when I find out and you can take it from there

Intermittant starts running crappy and tcl light comes on

When the TCL light is on usually means there's a problem with the traction control, need to have inspected real soon. Could be a speed sensor.

1994 Ford Escort, auto trans, 83,000 mi, randomly won't shift from 1st to 2nd, randomly loses power at hwy speeds

It could be an internal problem with a pump, or it could be it needs to be serviced really bad. Most 'oil change' places can also do transmission services... I'd try that first, before paying a big repair bill to a shop. good luck.

Why did my Audi a6 six speed lose power while driving and continuous battery drain?

Sounds like your alternator might be bad or your engine belt is loose (or broken). If you can get the car started, check voltage at the battery. If you have 12+ volts for at least 20 minutes, your alternator is ok. If you have less, it's bad.

Why would I occasionally lose power at random times. When starting the engine , every so often I will lose rpms and the car will stall.

1/ Massive air leak in intake pipe to throttle body.

2/ Bad electrical wire to rear of cylinder head as engine rocks on it's mounts.

3/ Oil pressure too high holding valves open....new oil pump required.

4/ Loose/cracked connection of idle air hose under manifold.

Loses power while in drive.

To what degree do you lose power and in what way? Do you loose over-drive or does it loose power and speed (on the streets, highway, or at any speed). From your discription it does sound like either a fuel flow/pressure issue or a clogged cat.
