It smoked initially, but now it just runs rough and accelerating sounds like a helicopter. I went to Pep Boys and just glancing and not electronically diagnosing my car, they told me that it sounded like and smelt like my exhaust cause by me blowing a head gasket. He through some numbers out for repair and it is more than what the car is worth. Please help, I just want it to run better so that I can sell it and upgrade a bit.

Sorry to tell you I was thinking it was the same thing, If you can do it your self it could be done for under $150.00 including parts and manuals but if your not a weekend do it yourself type of person it can cost you up to $1,000.00 depending on the shop. There is no way of getting around it either, it does need to get fixed. Shop around for the best priced independent mechanic if you need someone to do it for you, its an easy thing to do for a mechanic and even if they do a bad job it will at least last a few years before it goes out again.

Keeps stalling while driving. idling real crazy when I first start it.

I would suggest looking for a vacuum leak. Listed for a loud sucking sound with the engine idling. Or use some carburetor cleaner and spray around the engine with it running and listed for the idle RPM to change.

I have a 30" rear engine lawnmower and it was running good last fall ,but when I tried to start it this year the engine wouldn't crank.....any suggestions will be appreciated

sitting for a period induces rust on all wire terminals, corrosion in all electrical joints and flat battery
the carby is probably corroded up in side with a blockage in the main and idle jets
It will require a good service to check all the problem points.

My 1995 Dodge Caravan started making a VERY LOUD lawnmower sound. I looked under the hood and noticed a frayed cord behind the engine. Not sure what is going on.

Wheel Bearings sometimes make this noise when on there way out..
change quickly or they could disintegrate ,and collapse..

Today a noise started coming from underneath the hood of my 1999 Ford Taurus that sounded like a very loud lawnmower. It seems to do this both while driving and while idle, although the noise is...

Hello, This could be an indication your A/C is low on Freon or your Power Steering pump is low on fluid. Both systems are made to increase the idle speed to make the system work better. What happens in the case of the A/C, is the A/C compressor puts a strain on the motor when it engages the electric clutch on the compressor.

The A/C is wired such that when the compressor clutch engages, the engine RPM is increased to maintain the idle speed. The controls do this automatically and when your compressor is low of Freon, there is little resistance and the engine overspeeds. You are burning up your compressor if you lose the lubricant packaged inside it. That noise you hear is a dry compressor.

Turn your A/C or Defroster off and see if the overspeed and the noise stop. The compressor will run in the Defrost cycle too! Eventually your A/C will lose more of the Freon until the low pressure switch cuts the power to the compressor completely.

Some front wheel drive cars have a boost sensor in the power steering assembly for increasing the idle speed when you are turning the steering at low speeds. If the fluid level is low, it tricks the sensor into speeding up the idle to assist steering. Like in the A/C example, you can get overspeed when the fluid levels are low.

I hope my solution is very helpful in fixing your problem. Have your Freon checked or throw in an "OIL Charge" with the proper type of oil for your compressor. Then check your Power steering.

Growling engine noise only at idle. Cam area

Take all of the belts off for a short run at idle. If the sound goes away it is pulley related, spin each pulley and listen for bearing noise, also check for play at this time.

If the noise does not go away when the motor is driving no accessories you have a more serious problem.

Check the EGR for leaks. Here is th emost common cause of idle surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake
