SOURCE: 1988 Volvo 240 DL won't start B230F

I had more or less the same problem. It would only happen when the engine was cold. According to the mechanic, the fuel pump was going bad. After replacing it, I havent had it happen to me again, granted its only been a couple of days since I changed it.

SOURCE: starting a 1984 240 DL Volvo wagon after sitting in a garage for 5 years

Replace engine oil and filter, air filter and fuel filter.
Drain the fuel tank and add fresh fuel.
Remove the spark plugs and put a squirt of oil in each cylinder. Remove coil lead and crank engine until oil pressure comes up.(light goes out),
replace coil lead and start engine.. it will blow smoke for first few minutes. Check trans fluid, brake fluid etc before driving. Theres a good chance the brakes will need an overhaul.

It's possible that it's the fuel pump relay, bad computers or a host of other causes. The first thing I would do is to check fuses #'s 4 and 6. Rotate them in the holder as sometimes they get corrosion on them that hinders good contact.
You can put in a jumper wire from 4 to 6 and that should turn the pumps on and you can then start the car if the relay was the problem. Don't drive around like this as the pump will be on all of the time and it's not safe to have them in this state in case of an accident.

Try replacing the intake manifold gasket. Take the opportunity to do all the things that are tough to do when the manifold is in place, like cleaning out all the vacuum ports and replacing the rear water temperature sensor. If you pull the manifold completely out (which is not necessarily required) clean out the oil mist separator as well.

Hi, I have a 1995 volvo 850 with automatic tranny...all forward gears work fine but reverse does not engage unless you stick your foot out the door and roll the car back 2-4 feet then you can feel reverse...

check the transmition fluid level, ( do this with the engine running & the selector in P) if low top up & see if fault cured
also check fluid is no dis-coloured or smells burnt, if so you may have to drain the transmition & change the filter & fluid, a transmition flush would be a good idea.
if the problem remains it is most likely the seals/clutches in the transmition are worn

Does the volvo 2000 s40 have a timeing belt or timeing chain?

The 1.9 Liter has a cam belt which MUST be replaced at 105,000 miles. Also replace the water pump which is driven by the cam belt to save labor costs later one. This is an INTERFERENCE engine and as such if the belt breaks you will have serious engine damage. Therefore do not neglect this service.

you may want to check your fuses. there is one under the hood on drivers side. 25A blade. it will be located bye the fenderwell. it may be corroded or oxidized. clean it with sandpaper and place it back in. other then that the two other things may be your fuel pump relay. check it out by removing the plastic cover and check to see if anything looks burnt. if so it needs to be replaced. (its under the glovebox by the firewall) or your fuses on the interior drivers side ( it think it may be #6 or #4) may need to replace.
