Question about 1997 Lincoln Mark VIII

1 Answer

My 1997 Lincoln Mark 8 will not shift into gear.

My 1997 Lincoln Mark 8, would not shift from park to drive. I stopped the car where I was going, and the next time I started it, the transmission was locked. I called my son, and he told me, that I may have a problem with my brake lights. Sure enough, they do not come on, either the tail lights, or the large brake light in the rear. Is it a fuze, or do I need to replace the brake light switch? The computer tells me everything is ok, including the brake lights, if they are used. I was fortunate to finally have the shifter move from park, but I could have been stranded. Can you help?

It may be a shifter linkage issue. There is an interlock to prevent the car from bouncing out of park into reverse and if the linkage is not correctly adjusted, then it locks up.

SOURCE: Park/Tail lights not working. Brake/signals are

Before going ahead and spending money on a new module, test it first. The module is located under the steering column. You'll find a Brown wire on one of the connectors (i just looked at a wire diagram). Do no disconnect anything. Back probe the brown wire, which is the power feed to your park lights. With the lights off, there should be 0 volts on you voltmeter. Turn the park lamps on, There should be 12V. If there is not 12V, disconnect the connector and try to check voltage at the pin that feeds to the brown wire, if still not 12V, replace the module. If you do get 12V, then module is ok, find where the 12v is being dropped before making it to the lamps.

What fuse on 1998 Lincoln Towncar controls breaks and gear

Since you only mentioned drive, I'm going to presume you meant you can't shift into any gear, Is this correct? Normally, I would say this isn't an electrical issue, it's mechanical, either something in the shift column or the shift linkage is broken or come loose so I browsed the fuses in my owner's manual and you can check these fuses: fuse #8 (10A) - Shift Lock, Speed Control, fuse #14 (7.5A) - Transmission Control Switch, fuse #10 (20A) - Brake Pedal Position, Brake Pressure Switch. If you can't shift out of Park, turn key just enough to unlock steering wheel (not turn on dash lights) and see if shift lever moves. If so, then shift into Neutral and start car.

make sure brake lights work, if they dont the switch may be bad, not allowing you to pull out of park. check fuses also. if the seat motor runs, check if the cable has come loose.

There may be a wire loose. Lie on the driver floorboard with a flashlight shining up into the dash panel. Look up above the brake pedal. Tighten any loose connections you see. Good luck.
