Question about 1999 GMC Sierra

1 Answer

99Sierra 6.0l Gas. Bucks,sputters,pops when cold for only a 1/2mi

My 6.0l gas Sierra bucks like a bronco, sputters and pops when cold. This goes on for 1/2 to one mile then OK. Always a slight hesitation when pulling out from a stop. Dealer found no bad ''codes''. Replaced fuel pump, fuel reulator, now he wants to replace the fuel rails! I said no, I'll live with it. Dealer seems as if he don't know whats wrong and just wants to replace all parts. This is a 1999 6.0 gas with 68,000mi.
Any help???

Thanks, I'll try the sensors but I thought they should show up on the codes. As far as the dirty throttle body, the dealer did a full intake cleaning.

Could be an engine or air temperature sensor problem or a dirty throttle body.
You can check the values of the sensors with an ohmeter getting the specs hot and cold from a manual or your local auto parts store.
The throttle body needs a spray cleaner designed for throttle bodies only as some may damage plastics.

Check engine light

Evap ,,, bad gas cap,,,not venting,,,,,,,evap purge valve,,, under truck, has trash in it,,,,,,,,,evap solinoid,,, under hood stuck open,,,,all 3 pieces together are less than 100 bucks,,,,,,,, get the whole assenbly(purge valve) at pep boys,,, 31 bucks,, the othe 2 are 20 to30 each,,,get any where, also could be a a bad fuel presure sensor in the top of the gas tank,,, very rare not likly or the charcole canister ,,,never seen one bad,,,,if you have a odb2 scaner tool, scan down to the evap vp and evap purge,, at cold start the evap vp (h20)..,,,0.125...,and stay fairly steady, if it rises steady the solinoid under the hood is bad or stuck,,, .The evap purge should be 0.000 for about 90 seconds then open and be around 11-15% at idle,,,,

My 2000 Izuzu Rodeo sputters when idling

You most likely have a coil that needs to be replaced, it's about 150 bucks but I have the same problem, also get it tuned up which is another 100 bucks. Replacing the sparkplugs and the coil will increase your gas mileage and stop the piston from going out of order. It may also be your fuel pump, but that's a maybe, and your gas gauge would be messing up as well. Hope it helps.

Engine misses and bucks till it warmes up then runs fine

EGR valve or system is bad. that is Exhaust Gas Recycling valve. It's a pollution device that recycles exhaust gas back through the engine once it warms up. It's not suppose to work while engine is cold so there is a thermostat system for it that closes off the EGR valve while engine is cool. Once it warms up then it opens the valve. If you're recycling exhaust gas while engine is cool it will run rough. This can be hard for the average guy to troubleshoot as you need check the vacumn switches and thermostat valve.
