Re: changing the alternator belt on 96 toyota corrolla
Loosen the alternator mounting bolt, then loosen the alternator tensioner bolt - the head faces forward, under the alternator. Keep loosening the tensioner bolt until the belt is loose on the pulley. It takes a lot of turning. Do not use force on the pulley!

The alternator belt can be changed from the top, the ps belt is best done from the bottom with the tire removed. The alternator should have an adjusting bolt and the ps has an adjusting bracket. You loosen the bolts for the alternator and ps pump then use the adjusting bolts to tighten the new belts.
First you need to remove the serpintine belt or alternator belt. If it is a serpintine locate the tension pully(the one that doesn't look like it does anything) place a wrench over the pully bolt and pull while removing the belt. Most generaly all alternators have two bolts holding them in. Remove both bolts. and remove alternator on some vehicles you need to remove the top engine mounts to remove the acctual alternator. make sure you if you do this you put a jack under the bngine block. NEVER ON THE OIL PAN. After that simply remove the old alternator and replace it with the new one reinstall the serpintine belt as instructed on either the underside of your hood or where the hood latch is.
The 97 Corolla has three accessory belts. The alternator belt is the one you see when you look down on the passenger side standing near the front of the engine compartment. If fits over the alternator and the engine pulley. The belt beneath it is the a/c belt (if the car has a/c). It fits over the engine pulley and the a/c compressor. The power steering belt is toward the rear of the engine compartment, on the same side. It fits around the engine pulley and the power steering pump.
Replacing the alternator belt is not too difficult. Standing in front of the car and facing towards the rear, loosen the locking bolt under the right side of the alternator. Then loosen the alternator hinge bolt on top of the alternator. Now you are ready to loosen the alternator belt tensioner adjustment bolt, accessed under the alternator from the front. Turn the tensioner until the old belt is loose enough to remove, then turn it further so that the new belt will go on easily. Replace the belt and re-tension until you have about 1/4 in. to 1/8 in. of play in the belt, tighten the lock bolt and the hinge bolt, and run the engine. If the belt squeals it means you need more tension, but do not overtension. Recheck it after a few days.
FIRST TURN OFF RADIO.SO YOU WONT LOSE CODE.DISCONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.DISCONNECT THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS FROM THE ALTERNATOR.REMOVE THE ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT.THEN REMOVE THE PIVOT BOLT AND ADJUSTING BOLT OR THE MOUNTING BOLTS.THEN REMOVE THE ALTERNATOR FROM THE ENGINE.REMOVE THE ALTERNATOR FAN SHIELD IF EQUIPPED.
There are two bolts on the alternator: One holds it in position on a rail to adjust belt tension and the other mounts it to a brace. Loosen both of these and angle the alternator to release the belt tension and remove the belt. Put the new one on and reverse your removal technique. You want the belt taut, but not tight. If it squeals when it's running, just adjust the tension to make it a little bit tighter.
disconnect negative battery cable.first turn off radio before moving battery cable so you wont lose radio code.if you got a automatic belt tensioner rotate it counterclockwise to remove drive belt from pulley.if you dont have automatic belt tensioner.loosen the alternator pivot bolt and remove the adjustment arm bolt from alternator then remove alternator belt.
