is there an OD button that might have been pressed .if it has lots of miles on it it could be needing a flush job . last one I got done was around 100.00 at jiffy lube.

On my 2002 nissan altima it won't go in gear by pushing the clutch but if I cut the car off and put it in first gear and crank it it lurches forward what could be causing this and why won't my car go into...

When your engine is running at say 1200 rpm, the transmission is at zero speed with the clutch depressed. When you engage the clutch the first gear is still at zero speed trying to engage with a 1200 rpm crankshaft. In a normal transmission, they have a "synchronizer" which speeds up the gear to match the speed of the crankshaft so the gears mesh smoothly.
When you turn off your engine, the crankshaft is at zero rpm so it can go into gear with the zero rpm transmission. Bottom line...you have a problem with your synchronizer on your transmission. If you are lucky...a transmission shop could fix it without an overhall. But it needs to be diagnosed because it doesn't sound good.

Why does my car make noise on neutral but when i hit the gas pedal it goes away?

You need to locate the source of noise first , it seems to noise of drive line only. Which consist of flywheel , clutch system and gear box.
1) In case you are having same problem with clutch engaged or disengaged position ( while throttle is on) , then there is a possible problem with the neutral gear ( if it is not abnormal but just high in magnitude than it was previously than consider replacing the transmission oil) otherwise get the gear box checked with a transmission specialist.
2) In case you are having the noise problem only when clutch is engaged than u may consider to refit the clutch plate and pressure plate , there could be a problem of torquing.

CAR STARTS WILL NOT GO INTO GEAR. LINKAGE SHIFTS BUT TRANSMISSION DOES NOT ENGAGE.vACUUM LINES CHECKED ARE OK.

Your transmission pump likely failed. There are two hard lines on the side of your radiator. Those are the transmission cooler lines. Take one off and have someone crank the engine for a second. See if any fluid pumps out. Don't try and do it alone because it will come out fast if it does. If it doesn't come out, you need a rebuild on at least the transmission pump if not the whole tranny. If it does come out, then the problem could be as simple as the fuse for the electronic transmission or as complicated as a busted planetary gear in the transmission. Good luck.

Not yet, but you could end up breaking hard parts like the transmission output shaft or axle. The way the transmission is programed (Transmission Control Module) is when the transmission is on park, the transmission line pressure is drop so when you put it to gear, there will not be a big shock to the transmission and drive line. If you give it gas before it's in gear, the transmission line pressure rises which will give the transmission a large shock when it goes in to gear and can cause a major internal part to break like the out put shaft. The transmissions were program to go in to gear with a delay and the transmission line will rise once it's in gear, this way the transmission will last longer and less probability to any parts breaking unless abused that way you have described on how you don't wait for it to go in to gear before you take your foot of the gas and give it gas right away. And yes they can see that thought the DTC history on how the car is driven voiding any warranty.
Good luck and thank you for using Fixya

Hello. As you know, the transmission is one of the more sophisticated components in any auto. It takes the most transmission pressure to engage reverse, third, and fourth gear in an auto tranny. In an auto tranny, the shifter is connected to a linkage that manually shifts between the different gears in the transmission. When you shift into reverse, all transmission pressure is concentrated to engage reverse. When you shift to drive the transmission will operate normally, building pressure until it can shift into the next gear. With third, second, or first gear selected it will lock out all higher gears (Unless the TCU detects overrevving of the engine, in which case it will override gear selection and upshift to avoid engine damage). All the TCU does in a modern auto tranny is control shift points. Years and years ago, shifting was controlled by a spring attached to the gas pedal. When the gas pedal was depressed, the spring would expand. As tranny pressure grew, the spring would become compressed until it was fully compressed, engaging the next gear. The harder you stepped on the gas, the longer you went until the tranny shifted. In modern transmissions the TCU dictates shift points, and not much else. The TCU will also control when the torque converter will lock, but that's where it's duties end. The problem with engaging reverse is either a linkage issue, or a problem with the pump not building enough pressure to fully engage reverse.

Try putting the shifter in reverse, holding the brakes firmly, and giving the car gas. If the car reaches a higher RPM and suddenly slams into reverse it is the pump. The pump will only build enough pressure to engage reverse with higher RPM's. If the pump is severly damaged it won't engage at all, but if this is the case it probably won't engage third or fourth gear either at that point. If the problem is with the linkage, reverse just won't engage whatsoever, despite RPM's. I'd say start with the shift linkage. If it's bent or misadjusted it could cause reverse to not be fully engaged. The TCU doesn't control reverse at all, since there are no shift points and no need for the torque converter to lock.

This behavior is due to the innovation of the ECT-i ( Electronic Controlled Transmission with intelligence). Major car companies are developing this type of transmissions nowadays. And, since they are in their early stages, is still not fine-tuned; ergo still under research. This doesn't mean the transmission will fail either.

The vibration indicates the car is in low revs when engaged in the last gear. Let's say it's a 5 speed auto trans... and the car is going about 35mph at 5th gear... even though the ecu in the car recognizes it should go to 4th gear, the only thing the car ecu can do is reduce the gas input, because the trans got it's own ecu, and it's not controlled by the main ecu anymore. When you
accelerate, increases revs, ergo downshifting to 4th gear and getting rid of the vibration. The powerplant in the vehicle is still OK. No need to worry about.
