Question about 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse
SRS module is a very sensitivity electronic equipment.
Check voltage at the battery posts.
It should be 13.8V to 14.2V
If it's under 13.8V then clean alternator cable,belt tensioner, and belt.
Recheck voltage after you clean the battery terminals.
Here's a quick check list for most common cost of SRS / Air bag problem.
Dirty contacts on driver and passenger seat belt buckles
Dirty contacts on seat belt connectors (under seats)
Dirty contacts on driver and passenger sides weight sensors (under seat)
Weight on passenger seat
(Example: grocery package trigger SRS / Air Bag light on the way home.)
I recommend you to pass an vacuum over the contacts and use CRC electronic parts cleaner to rule out connectivity problem.
I DO NOT recommend disconnecting the negative battery connector to clean the code(s).
Without the code(s) the dealer will takes "BILLABLE" time to reproduce the problem.

You are right, SRS is to do with the airbags (Secondary Restraint System, the seatbelts being the first!)
It is almost certainly a bad sensor or a fault with an airbag squib (the thing that fires the bag.)
I would advise against DIY fault-finding. Let a professional look at it using proper diagnostic equipment.
