Speedometer working 10 miles faster

If the speedometer is off 10 at all speeds it is likely a stepper motor repair is needed. You can read about in a website we set up at GM Speedometer Recall

Speedometer not working

your problem is with the vehicle speed sensor.
It should be located on the transmission tucked underneath the motor very close to the passenger side axle. If the wires have come off or are corroded, this could be your problem. If the wires and connectors look okay, then most likely, the sensor is bad.

My temp gage and speedometer gage is going haywire, temp gage is blocking my speedometer needle, 10 miles. What is the problem?

i need a little more clarification but it sounds like either you have a bad ground on your gauge cluster or it is simply going out/having a fault

My 1987 Chevorelet S-10's speedometer cable is making a huge racket. When I go beyond 10 miles an hour it sounds just like a card pinned to a bicycle and is making a burning smell just in the dashboard. I...

The speedometer cable is bad. They get dry and start making noise and smell like it is burning. You will need to replace the speedometer cable. It is not real expensive. Probably about $100 depending on where you take the truck.

Both speedometer & tachometer not working, both reading wrong.

There was a recent class action law suit settled with GM for this exact problem. You can google gm speedometer lawsuit and get lots of information. Unforutunately for most people I think the warranty was limited to 7 years and 70,000 miles. Which isn't a lot of miles for most people.

If you car isn't covered by the warranty there is a way to "reset" the speedometer.

You can turn the ignition slowly like you are going to start the engine. There is a very small "dead" space where you will see your guage lights go off.

What you want to do is cycle the ignition switch from off to that dead space. Each time you do it your stuck speedometer will move towards zero about 10 mph. So if its stuck on 40 you will have to cycle it at least 4 times.

At first you will probably actually hit the ignition and the engine will try to start.....just release it and try it again.

I know this because I have a 04 avalanche with 80,0000 miles and it has this problem about twice a month.

My 1997 speedometer is intermitting. It will go from 10 to 50 up and down for 10 miles or so and then it will go back and forth from 40 to 50.For the past two weeks it was ok. Now it happens all over...

u need to pull and check the end of this sensor for metal, once again u don't have a speedometer cable, your speedometer is electronic and this sensor is what will cause the problem u are having, it is in the side of the transmission case. see photo

Speedometer/Odometer is off about 10%, 2006 Jetta, 2.5

I have a 2006 and a 2004 Jetta - the '06 is off by 4 mph and the '04 is off by 2 mph - differences calcuated by multiple GPS units in the cars for testing.

Apparently I took the easy way out and bought larger tires to compensate for the speedo difference. My '04 now matches my GPS mph and my '06 is off by just .5 mph.

Go to http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp?action=submit and compare the OEM size to larger size tires - this will tell you, in MPH, the difference between the tires. Figure out how much your speedometer is off, go to this web site and find a tire that will be "faster" than the OEM that is equal or close to the speedometer difference.
