Question about Saturn SL1

Flickering lights...dash and exterior

More noticable when at night while headlights are on. Dash lights get bothersome while driving long distance. Every so often I see the headlights flicker. I have driven it from Little Rock to Dallas to Galveston and back like it is. It runs ok I feel it could use a little more rpm on idle. But I am afraid it will go out on me a long way from home and not near a big city. My kind of luck.Any suggestions on what I can try at home before shelling out money at a shop.

I checked the fusebox and the fuses. I looked for recall and the only ones were for bkolt for shoulder harness and seat belt hold down. I cleaned the cables and where they insert on the battery. Had someone put a hand held device I guess amp checker. And it was showing 12. He said is was a little on the weak side. I went ahead and bought a battery duralast gold for 89 plus tax. It has a 3 yr warranty and 7yr prorated plus free junp start phone number. Anyway, that did solve the problem. And adding 4 new spark plugs put the rpm on the idle back where it should be.

Sounds like maybe your fusebox is having issues, or at least the fuse cradle that holds the fuses for your panel and headlights. Alternately, it could be your light cluster switch, which can sometimes begin to short out due to it's functionality (switching on / off over many years). The good news is it does not sound like a huge expensive problem. Remember to start with the least expensive options first, if you are repairing it yourself, or to go to the facility you choose to fix your vehicle with a bit of knowledge about it. They will not overchage you if you sound like you're aware of what it may be. Unfortunately, with a problem such as this, without looking under the hood, it is very hard to accurately diagnose precisely what the problem is. I'l offer this though, you might want to check recall notices Saturn may have had. If your problem is on there, it may not cost you a cent. Most people tend not to look at past recall notices on a vehicle. It could savce you some real money if the recall is not limited to a certain cutoff date. Take care.

My dash lights and gages are not working and my night driving lights are not working either... do i need a new cluster

If you mean the parking lights, they are not affected by the cluster.
The gauges are on one fuse, the dash lights are on another, and the parking lights on a third circuit.
I would check for power at the fuses then headlight switch for the lighting problems. And for voltage at the fuse and the connector on the back of the cluster for the gauges problem.

The other night while driving I turned my highbeams on and my headlights went out all together. Also I noticed I have no dash lights or dome lights.I thought it was probably the dimmer switch,so I tore it...

Did you check the fuse it is in the side of the dash on passenger side between the dash and the door. And there is one under the hood for relays and large fuses.

your auto headlamps are operated from a photo (light) sensor on the dash.-thats where you start and end, just replace the sensor...wow $800, they were gonna rob you blind!

Dash lights are out.

Are you also noticing this in the daytime hours? Most vehicles have an auto dimmer function on the radio lights for night-time driving and when you shut the headlamps off the go back to the original daytime brightness.

Dash lights go off intermittently

I'm no expert, I recently purchased a 2003 vibe. I noticed the automatic headlight's sensors can be super-sensitive, about an hour hours before dusk they'll kick my headlights on (when the sun is still shining!), or sometimes when I go into an underpass, and then sometimes they'll realize it's light enough and turn themselves off. This would cause your dash lights to go to the 'headlights on' mode and turn the headlamp signal on, the intensity is controlled by the dimmer/dome light control on the left side of the dash. Check to see if the dimmer is down too far, as this could cause the lights to dim when the automatic headlights turn on. It's also possible that the dimmer is not working, thus no power is getting to the dash lights through the dimmer. Try testing it by starting the car in daylight, then manually turn on the headlights, then adjust the dimmer. Like I say, I'm no expert, just guessing because I've noticed it happen similarly on my Vibe, but my dimmer was at half-way, as I like it for night driving. Someday, I'd like to disable the automatic sensors and DRL.

08 Yaris, Dashlights/radio/ and nobs lights do not come on

I had the same problem. On the the dash on the left side near the steering wheel, there is a wheel like knob. Roll the knob until your dash lights come on when you have the headlights on. If its rolled in one direction they're off in the other they're on.
