Wrench light came on then overheated

I was pulling my camper truck was doing great for about 60 miles the wrench symbol came on and it started overheating. I turned truck off and wrench light went off but about 5 miles it overheated again

SOURCE: engine overheated, now car won't start without giving it gas

Some cars cut off as a fail safe to overheating especially on newer cars. The computer controls the fans and if they are not working the computer is probably telling the car to shut off. Have you replaced the motors already, if not, this is what's happening. Once you replace the motors it should run fine. I wouldn't suggest driving it too much with this problem as it may affect the computer by giving it false info.

Hi,
As you may know, modern automobiles (from the 1980's to present) have at least one computer controlling them. This computer (or computers) control the fuel to air mixture via either electronic fuel injection or a feedback carburetor. On the newer vehicles the computer also controls the ignition timing (That's when the spark plugs fire).
The newer a vehicle is,the more stuff the computer(s) control. The newest vehicles have the computer shifting the automatic transmission or transaxle as well as controlling spark and fuel mix. Many vehicles also have a climate control computer which controls the A/C and heat. Luxury cars often have vehicle anti-theft controlled by computer: some even will adjust the seat and steering wheel to suit different drivers when they enter the car!!!
The downside to all this "smarts" on a car is obvious: what happens when something breaks? The good thing is that the onboard computers themselves are very reliable. The problem is that the computers rely on a whole flock of sensors and wires to give them the data needed to make your car run. These sensors are not nearly as reliable as the computer itself, in fact they fail quite often!
This is where a "limp home mode" comes into play. Whenever the vehicle computer gets a reading from a sensor that is obviously wrong, it will "assume" a value that it "knows will work". On the earliest computer controlled cars with feedback carburetors, if the computer got bad readings from sensors, it would run the carb at the richest setting. You would get horrible gas mileage, but the car WOULD run. The computer would then turn on an amber "CHECK ENGINE" light. It would also store a trouble code in its memory telling what sensor was giving a "bogus" reading.
The newer computers are much more sophisticated, and just because a "CHECK ENGINE" light comes on doesn't really mean the computer is totally in a "limp home mode". Depending on what sensor reading is out of specs the computer may still be doing a pretty good job of controlling the engine. For example, some cars can have the "CHECK ENGINE" light come on if you don't tighten your gas cap tight enough after filling up!
On most vehicles the "CHECK ENGINE" light will go out if the sensor starts giving normal readings again, although some computers will make you use a scan tool to turn the light off.
This basically looks like the sensor to me, try getting that fixed for good.

I have a 06 Ford freestyle and it runs great but this morning it suddenly had no acceleration power....is this a gas sensor?


Is the check engine light lit ? Or any other warning lights ? How many miles on the vehicle , has it been well maintained ? Clogged catalytic converter will cause a no power problem . Is there a yellow wrench symbol lit on the instrument cluster .

diaconnect the battery for 2hrs so it loses its memory-the wrench symbol means service is due not something wrong -Denny

I just replaced the trans in my 99 durango for the second time in a week it drove great for the first 50 miles then it loses all the gears fluid smells burnt New fluid filter cooler and lines ...


Could it be possible the coolant lines are reversed not allowing the trans fluid to reach the cooler? The pressure line from the trans pump can easily be identified by taking it loose and directing the fluid into a container.

Sounds like 2 separate problems. The wrench light signifies that the truck goes into" limp home" mode and that there is a problem with your electronic speed control. As far as the truck pulling; is it doing it just driving without using the brakes? It could mean that you may need an alignment, tire rotation , low tire pressures or all of the above. Check for the cooling fans working or not,also the thermostat,it can be stuck,and the coolant level maybe dropping and getting air in the system.

Vehicle dies


Sounds like a possible fuel pump problem...When they begin to go bad they will overheat and lock up, then work fine for a while and do the same thing again. By changing the filter you lowered the flow resistance and allowed the pump to work a bit easier but still being bad, it did the same thing again. There are other things that can do this as well, but pump is most common.

Wrench light is on and odometer shows negative mileage


The negative number means the car should have had it's oil changed that many miles ago. Oil life starts at 100% for new oil & counts down every 10%. At 15% the display will always show, which means it's near time to change the oil.

usersteve83, your oil may have been changed but the timer not reset. Reset the timer as shown...
1. Turn ignition to the "ON" position. (do not start engine)
2. Press SEL/RESET repeatedly until the oil life indicator is displayed.
3. Press & hold the SEL/RESET for about 10 seconds until it blinks then let go of the button.
4. Press the SEL/RESET again for about 5 seconds or until the oil life indicator resets to 100%.

Wrench = Maintenance Minder: Symbol letter & number...
Symbol A - Relace engine oil.
Symbol B - Replace engine oil & filter, Inspect front & rear brakes, Check parking brake adjustment, Visually inpest the tie rods, suspension components,driveshaft boots, brake hoses & line (including ABS), all fluid levels & their conditions, exhaust system, fuel lines & connections.
Symbol 1 - Rotate tires.
Symbol 2 - Replace air cleaner element (dusty conditions every 15K miles) & replace dust & pollen filter (behind glovebox) every 15K miles if mainly dusty or city driving.
Symbol 3 - Replace transmission fluid.
Symbol 4 - Replace spark plugs.
Symbol 5 - Replace engine coolant.

All above are taken from the 2006 Civic EX owner's manual.
