OK went to three different junk yards. I bought a used assembly. They wouldn't let me get just the clip or one cable. $50. A new one runs 175-200 plus tax. I have it disconnected on the inside. Now would like info on what to do under the hood. It must be simple. Took the man at the yard 30 minutes. Twice!! He got one off an automatic the first time. I sent him back for the right part.

Have to take lots of time outs. heat index is 100 and I have high bp at 49F. Got the cables disconnected under the hood. small clip on tip of each one came off with fingers. And flat 90 degree medium clip on each one holding outer sleeve to bracket. Came off with fingers. Now it has a (I'm guessing) rubber boot holding the 2 cables to the inner firewall. (wall near gas pedal) Not strong enough to pull or yank the heck out of it to get it out. Going for larger screwdriver to poke and jab.

Nevermind...I got it out already!!! Used extender bar and hammer from the inside and beat it out. Then wiggled and pushed till I got the inside part of the cables through the little hole.Yeah for me!! Saturn of Mesquite wanted 600 to fix it....200 for the part and 400 for the labor. They are very good and I do recommend them on Saturns. They've fixed my 93 I had when no one else could on electrical. Taking a break again before putting used one in reverse order of course. Thanks anyway. Hope this helps someone else with the same problem.Linda

Hello:
NAPA sells the replacement bushing ($20) better than Saturns $200 to replace both cables.
Good luck

I have a 96 saturn sl it was driving fine for two months with a little grinding going into first and second gear. I went out this mourning and started moving going over a speed bump I pushed the cluth in I...

take the console out and look under the shifter, if the shifter cables are disconnected from the shifter go to a parts store or ebay and get yourself a Saturn shifter bushing repair kit. happens all the time to S Saturns and maybe the Ls look on youtube for instructions to remove console and put on the bushing kit.

if the shifter cables are still connected you may have to be looking around for a lower mileage used transmission. 96-98 saturn will fit so long as the donor car has the same head, being DOHC or SOHC. so if you have an SL1 you can use a transmission out of another SL1, or an SC1, or an SW1. do not mix a 2 with a 1, bad mojo.

I have a Saturn 1999 its a 5 speed stick shift the bushing on the end off the cable attached to the stick is broken. should i buy the cable or change the bushing ?

You can't get the bushing. Cable only. and there are two cables to replace. Not that hard, but you will have to jack the front of the car up to access the cable plate that bolts to the fire wall.

Broken shift cable on manual trans. how do unhook cable for shifter

pull the console out and take a good look at the bushings which connect the shifter to the cables. before you buy a shift cable kit take a look at a saturn shifter bushing repair kit at a parts store or on ebay, this is a very common problem on saturn S's 91-02 and often can be fixed with the 20 dollar repair kit. look on youtube for instructions on pulling the console, there are only 4 screws, and the boots to deal with.

1999 Saturn SL2 manual transmission stuck in gear, shifter moves freely. Where could the problem location be...under car or do I need to take out the console to locate problem

The problem is the bushing that attaches the cable to the shifter has failed. This is a plastic bushing and can be reattached if the tabs are not broken. You need to remove the console to access the cable end, the bushing goes through the plastic cable end and snaps on the ball attached to the shifter. There is a stainless replacement part available on line for $29.00 check satarnshifterbushing.blogspot.com

Shifter feels fine and so does the clutch pedal but only goes into first none of the other gears please let us know im thinking about buy this car thanks its a 91 saturn sl

Keep the hell away from it, many things changed after the first model year which was 91, Spend another 50 bucks and get a 92. Pull up the shifter boot and look at the shift cable ends where they attach to the bottom of the shifter. Most likely the bushings will be broken.

The shifter/transmission on my manual 5 spd 1999 Saturn SL1

This just happen to me a few weeks ago. If you take out the center piece in the car you should be able to see that the actual shifter is no longer connected to the rod which goes into the transmission. It is an easy problem to fix, however it is not cheap. I was told that you have to buy a complete new kit($250.00) for the shifter, however my dad gave me a different solution. He took some wire, and made a spider web type thing to keep it connected. On my car it was a small round plastic piece that broke, but I cannot remember what it was actually called. This little piece is not available through Saturn by itself, only through a complete kit. Please ask questions if this is not clear enough. Thanks :)

Saturn shifter linkage

The bushings on ebay work from what I understand, but a bit pricey. The bushing in question is a P.O.S. for sure. Easy fix though if you have tools and time. First I drilled out the ball that the end of the linkage, the one your faithfull broken bushing use to ride on. popped a 3/8 inch bolt thru the drilled hole, put a piece of 3/8 inch heater hose "cut to length desired" over the bolt ( this is what the linkage ring rides on ) put a rubber gromet or rubber washer that has a hole big enough to fit over the heater hose on each side of the linkage ring ( oh and dont forget the lube - regular grease will eat rubber so use good judgement). put a washer big enough to keep your gromet or rubber washer from falling off, and then a lock nut, and I cannot stress the fact that it has to be a lock nut. DO NOT tighten the living **** out of everything, that little linkage ring is plastic after all just tighten it "lightly snugish" and just make sure your lock nut can't be un-tightened by hand. I hope all of this makes sense, anyway total repair cost- one hour of my time, about $4 of parts at the local auto parts store. best of all, it should outlast the car. Oh fyi, I used rubber parts because that is less likely to break the plastic linkage ring. Showed what I did to a mechanic in town, said now he actually knows what to do next time one of those f-ing saturns comes in with busted linkage. Good luck fellow "manual" saturn owners!
