SOURCE: Starter relay fuse blowing in a 1995 Ford Explorer

Sooooooo. The relay coil is drawing more current than the fuse can handle..... First guess is a short in the wire between the fuse and the relay coil. I would disconnect the wire that powers the solenoid relay coil. Then I would try (momentarily) clip leading a wire to the battery positive terminal - and touching the other end to the relay coil terminal connection. (Caution!! you are bypassing the factory wire and its associated fuse. If your temporary wire becomes hot - IMMEDIATELY remove it from the coil.) ------------------------However, I suspect that you will have the coil energized and that the engine will turn over....since the key is not in the ON position, the motor will not start.

If this works-then you know that the factory wire is touching the chassis somewhere... and you can either remove it and run another from the fuse to the coil terminal - or try to find the point of the short (good luck - and let me know)

Check the small wire going to the starter relay. It should have 12V when the ignition is in the start position. If it doesn't, you either have a bad igntion switch or a wiring problem from the switch to the relay. If you don't have a volt meter, you can use a 12V test light. Let me know if you need more help.

My truck does it too. Read a few articles about the problem and most talked about a Recall of the main starter harness. I looked at mine and there was Green corrosion on the Starter loom. I had just enough slack to solder a new end on it.

You may be able to get another wire loom with your Vin#. After I fixed mine, it never broke again. But my dash gauges still peg out and then work. Doesn't seem to bother anything. I put on a Starter relay and yours is the same age as mine. Try jumping the Starter relay to see if it is bad.

My dad's 1986 Ford F250 pickup, 460 CI won't start, no lights,

It could only be a couple of things. First check the wires to the starter solenoid. There will be a positive cable from the battery to the relay. Then you will have two more wires that go to two terminals. Jump between the positive terminal and the starter terminal. It should crank over. Sounds like you already did this step. If it does not crank check your battery. If the battery is good and you have power to the relay then I would suspect the starter bendix is probably to blame. You can replace the bendix on the starter. If you still have no power you will need to start at the ignition switch. Hope this helps. Also the gas in the vehicles tank could be bad and causing it to not continue running. Sitting for a year with a fuel tank not full will allow condensation to occur in the fuel tank. Last but not least most fusible links are attached at the starter relay because this is where the main power distribution occures to the vehicles other systems

When I turn the key the relay starts to click.

Ford loves that relay.. Jump the two big posts on the relay. the starter should crank. the little post is from your ignition switch. Jumping the two large terminal bypasses the relay. Make sure the vehicle is in neutral with the brake set.Once you know how to do that, try to key dtart in park, then neutral. If it won't do anything, Your neutral safety switch is defective.
If it will start in any gears, again bad neutral switch. Be careful and good luck. Use a jumper cable to jump the two posts. Anything smaller can get you shock or burned.

I had this problem on my F250. I actually just ended up putting in a switch that by passes the relay and brings power directly to ignition. Turn off switch so you dont drain battery, and turn on switch to start car.
