There is a plastic gear on the bottom side of the steering column you can turn till it lines up, but usually the holder breaks and you have to replace it , the wheel is black and the bracket is white

does it go into drive an then just not shift out of first? or does it not go into gear at all? if it doesn\'t shift out of first then check the transmission speed sensor i believe its down on top of the tranny on the f150"s if its not that check the kick-down cable

How do you adjust the shift cable on a 1995 gmc jimmy, wont go into reverse or park.


On the 1995 Jimmy, the shift cable can come loose on the mount on the side of the transmission where the cable meets the trans. When it slips, the alignment goes off and causes the driver to not be able to put the trans into park. If you take a long stick you can push the shift arm on the trans to the park position and your trans will go into park.....what you (and I) really need to know is how to take the shift cable mount apart and reset it.

Your shift indicator is out of alignment or your shift linkage is out of adjustment. If you have the shift lever all the way up and are sure it has locked into park try shifting to Neutral and see if you can start it in neutral. If it starts this is a simple adjustment. if it doesn't you will need to replace the neutral safety switch or have the TCM repaired at a transmission shop.

Put a new engine in a 1998 isuzu rodeo now it won't start. I thought it was the neutral safety switch because the R was on the dash and it was in park


This could be the problem. If your dash indicator is showing reverse but the transmission is in park it could be the safety switch. I'm not talking about the safety switch in the transmission though. In automatics they put a second switch to kill the starter from engaging. You need to adjust the linkage. If your shifter isn't actually on the column but the indicators are there is a cable that attaches the floor shift to the column and that is adjustable. Put the Floor shifter in Park and turn the column section nearest the dash by hand until you find park. Then adjust the cable length as needed. If all you have is the column shift it is still a cable adjustment. Set the emergency brake, drop the shifter to low 1 and adjust the cable linkage by loosening it on the transmission and manually move it all the way to low 1 then tighten it down then move the shifter to park and repeat teh adjustment process to verify that it is properly aligned. Lock the linkage back down and see if the vehicle will start, if it doesn't move the shifter to neutral and try to start the vehicle if the vehicle starts then check the column shift safety switch at the park position to make sure it is still in place and working. Typically, if the vehicle won't start in Park or Neutral it is more likely to be the Transmission neutral safety switch.

It could be a bad ignition switch or bad starter wire from the starter switch, or the PNP is not adjusted correctly:

Here are instructions on how to remove and replace the PNP, but read over it to understand how to adjust:
Park/Neutral Safety Switch REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION ES300 1993-94 Models
  1. With the ignition switch in the LOCK position, disconnect the negative battery terminal. If equipped with an air bag system, wait at least 90 seconds or longer before performing any other work.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Disconnect the Park/Neutral switch connector.
  4. Remove the clip from the shift control cable.
  5. Remove the nut and control cable.
  6. Remove the bolts and pull out the Park/Neutral switch. To install:
  7. Install the Park/Neutral switch and loosely install the bolts.
  8. Adjust the switch and torque the bolts to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  9. Install the control shaft lever.

  11. Install the clip to the shift control cable.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14. Make sure the vehicle will start only in the PARK or NEUTRAL position.

  1. With the ignition switch OFF, disconnect the battery cables, negative terminal first. Allow 90 seconds to elapse before performing any other work.
  2. Apply the parking brake fully and block the rear wheels.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the Park/Neutral position switch.
  4. Remove the locknut and disconnect the control cable from the manual shift lever.
  5. Remove the clip from the holding the control cable to the bracket.
  6. Remove the nut, washer and the manual shift lever from the manual valve shaft.
  7. Using a flat bladed tool, bend the lock washer back away from the nut.
  8. Remove the nut and lock washer from the Park/Neutral switch.
  9. Remove the two bolts and the Park/Neutral position switch. To install:
  10. Install the Park/Neutral position switch to the manual valve shaft. Leave the two bolts loose at this time.
  11. Install the lock washer and nut. Torque the nut to 61 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  12. Using a flat bladed tool, bend the lock washer over the nut to secure the nut in place.
  13. Adjust the Park/Neutral as follows:
    1. Install the manual shift lever to the Park/Neutral switch and set the shift lever to the neutral ( N) position.
    2. Align the groove and the neutral basic line on the Park/Neutral switch.
    3. Hold the Park/Neutral switch in this position and tighten the two bolts to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  14. Install the manual shift lever with washer and nut.
  15. Install the control cable to the manual shift lever and install the nut. Torque the nut to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  16. Install the control cable to the bracket by installing the clip.
  17. Connect the electrical connector to the Park/Neutral switch.
  18. Lower the vehicle and check the vehicles shifting positions.
  19. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery.
  20. Verify that the vehicle only starts in PARK or NEUTRAL.
GS300, LS400, SC300 and SC400
  1. With the ignition switch OFF, disconnect the battery cables, negative terminal first. Allow 90 seconds to elapse before performing any other work.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. If necessary, remove the front exhaust pipe.
  4. Disconnect the neutral start switch connector.
  5. Remove the control shaft shift lever.
  6. Pry off the washer and remove the nut.
  7. Remove the bolt and pull out the neutral start switch. To install:
  8. Install the Park/Neutral switch and loosely install the bolt.
  9. Adjust the switch as follows:
    1. Loosen the neutral start switch bolt and place the shift lever in the N position.
    2. Align the groove and the neutral basic line.
    3. Hold in position and tighten the bolt to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
  10. Install the nut and washer.
  11. Install the control shaft shift lever.
  12. Connect the electrical connector.
  13. Install the front exhaust pipe. Torque the front nuts to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm). Torque the pipe support bracket to bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm). Torque the No. 2 front exhaust pipe to the front exhaust pipe bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery.
  16. Verify that the vehicle will only start in the N or P positions.

Maybe try to press the brake pedal and run the gear shift throughout the full range of gears while the car is on level ground, and retry the starter to see if there is a faulty PNP adjustment.

Try to start in Neutral not Park, and jiggle the gear shift back and forth to see if the PNP is not adjusted right.

Shift indicator is lose and dose not line up


There is an adjustment on the indicator.....if you take your steering column covers off.....you can reach it on the back/right side (passenger) the cable runs up through an adjustment nut.....you can turn the nut until the selector lines up.....its just a little finger wheel/nut....if you can't see it easy, remove the outer dash (just the black part) bezel and it's right there....good luck....should take 10 minutes at most.

1990 automatic 85,000 miles- Shifter will not stay in park and will start jumping ahead if parked on an incline. Also, when starting the car, the key stays in start position- starting the engine and...


Check the shift cable for proper adjustment. Remove the console, put shift selector in N (make sure wheels are blocked), remove lock pin from cable adjuster, check that the hole in the adjuster is perfectly in line with the hole in the shift cable. (there are 2 holes in the end of the shift cable positioned 90degrees apart to allow for 1/4 turn adjustments) If not perfectly aligned, loosen the lock nut on the shift cable and adjust as necessary. Tighten the lock nut and install the lock pin in the adjuster. If the lock pin feels like it's binding when being installed, it's still out of adjustment and must be adjusted again.
The key staying in the start position: try spraying wd-40 or similar lubricant into key hole, if condition is the same, you will need to change the key ignition assembly, as it is worn out,

This is the same as a Ford Escort 1.9, the #1 cylinder should be all the way up. To confirm- the crak shift mark should be on zero which is Crank Shift Center- THe camshift sproket should align with the headmark. Make sure both marks don't move. Align the belt- not too tight , not to loose

Nuetral safety switch on 1994 ford f150


the neutral safety switch should be located near the base of the steering column. you may need to drop the column itself to change it. be sure to keep all screws and wires attached unless you need to remove them when working beneath the dashboard. you also need to be careful about the shifter cable that indicates where the shifter is when it moves. it is easily adjusted by loosening the screw that attaches it to position the indicator on the top of the column so that it indicates the correct position (ie indicates that it is d, not n, or r once you have finished.) the switch is easily removed, but also easily mis-aligned so the switch is in the wrong position. be slow and patient to avoid mis-aligning it during installation. it should be installed in the neutral position as it comes packaged and aligned that way.
hope this is of help.
it isn't difficult to do, but depending on how good you are at being a contortionist, you may want a mechanic to do it for you.
