No, it is not repairable, it is blown, good and gone. What punched out the side of the engine block was an iron rod called a connecting rod, affixing the piston to the crankshaft. When it happens, it's a total loss for the engine, the whole bottom end is just scrap iron. The loud clanking was probably the end and pieces of the conn rod being thrown around by the turning crankshaft. You will need to find another engine for it, if you want to keep the car. All from a dipstick tube, you have experienced a blown engine, also known as "throwing a rod", the usual consequence of oil starvation. A big loss, but you be wiser for it. Good luck.
actually i would say it is the vaccum actuator on the frontend thats not applying, i dont think its a transfer case issue.. if you look on the punkin on the frontend, you will see it, it will have an electic plugin and a vaccum hose that goes to it...
check on the frontend, some of the chevys have an electricl controlled vaccum actuator that locks the frontend in, it will be close to the punkin. if the vaccum line is off or has a hole in it, it will not engauge in 4 wheel drive. hope this helps
