5.4 engine misfiring and flooding itself out

My f 150 is misfiring real bad and flooding itself out. It will barely idol and when it does, the cab fills with fumes. I've changed bot cam sensors, spark plugs, all coils and boots. An idea on what to do next?

I had a problem with a chevy with random misffires on all cylinders. It was the computer. Fords have very few problems with there computers. Does the check engine come on? Maybe have it scanned.

It could be carbon deposits on valve seats keeping valves from totally closing. You can try getting you a can of motorcraft PM3 top end engine cleaner and get engine up to operating temp then remove one of the small vacuum lines from the intake and draw the contents of the can slowly into the engine.After you have drawn in the contents shut engine off and let it soak for about 45 minutes then crank it back up and let it run until it clears. Now it will smoke like a forrest fire while you are doing this so don't be alarmed,just tell the neighbors you are spraying for mosqitos.This may cure the problem. If not you may be looking at a valve job.
This can be verified with a compression test if this is what is causing it.

did you check the injector pulse on that cylinder and it also could be the pcm , i had a taurus and a sable with good coils stop firing 2 cylinders and it was the pcm ,the code it gave was secondary coil but changed the pcm and it worked fine

The best advice that I can give to take the truck and have it hooked to a computer for diognostics. If you changes all the items listed, then it has to be a computer problem.

You are at thhe right trail what controls spark is coil pack crank sensor sparkplugs and plug wire but the most important is power . I mean 12 volt connections and ground This includes checking fuses you need a simple volt meter doesnt have to expensive or fancy just to pick up 12 volts let start with fuses in the engine juction box (there not mark to what it belongs to) make sure none are open. especially fuse 19 and 24 , next go to the crank sensor make sure the tabs are snuggly on now to the coil pack there is a red and light green wire this comes from ignition and feeds 12 volts at the coil pack measure that voltage is it 12 volts if not correct it this is from ignition switch ( you can make a tool that feed 12 volt with a wire and a fuse in series and attatch it to battery and the primary wire this is known as hot wire) next go to the ECM wiggle the wires see if that get a connection going if not go back to the ICM here are the wire you are to measure the tan light green, this is from ECM and it is pulsed it measure 5vlts to 0 volts switched then measure the tan orange the same thing 5 volts to zero,then tan white again 5vlts to zero. any one of these 5 to zero fails you fix is the ecm

How to repair a number two misfire


ok you have P0302 DTC errors. why not POST ALL ERRORS?

P0302

means that cylinder was weak, (NOTHING MORE)

caused by 4 things.

1: bad spark (even spark plugs, ever do a tuneup, BAM , easy peasy)

2: bad compression, (a tests shows 150 or more on #2 and it\'s ok.

3: bad fueling (tool lean or too rich) the real scan tool shows you which it is , did you look at fuel trim and make sure closed loop works at idle and light 40mph cruise (flat ground)?

4: water (coolant) is leaking into combustion chamber.



there are the 4 clauses.



#2 cyl. misfire.

what year, must we guess that too, and country? and engine size option too?

i think that is random misfire.
what is the question,
how to diagnose it?, read the FSM.
or who can fix it, answer any ASE mechanic on earth can.

open the FSM what does it say about 300s.
all say the same thing. MISFIRE GROSS and random cylinders.
and can be bad engine compression bad ,bad spark or bad fueling.

top causes. (not a guess, )
1: never ever doing the 60k mile service, not EVEN new spark plugs.
2: lean AFR. (1 example, low fuel presssure) for dirty MAF if it has one.
3:rich Air fuel ratios. (or flooding) causing misfire, high fuel pressure.
too high, (horrible clogged up air filter? extreme)
4: cam timing way off, cam belt slip or even a chain, if deaf.
#4 cause huge drop in compression.

That is the why, there are more.
why not get the car scanned and check out for if the engine
needs help or sensors read wrong using a SCAN TOOL.
does cooling system (engine) hit 180F or more. hold there.
if not it will rich misfire.
using a real scan tool shows all DTCs codes stored. other wrong or cheap tools will miss lots of factory code.s

The engine is getting extra fuel from a ruptured fuel pressure regulator it is located on the fuel rail and gets manifold vacuum to operate remove small hose and if has gas in it the replace it.

Have you changed the spark plugs since it was new,
6 years ago?

Do you have a MIL Lamp light on dash or blinking?

Have it checked for stored codes, not seen by a code
reader & checked for cylinder misfire count,with a professional
scan tool

O2 Sensors-front one closest to engine--100,000 miles
on them?

Check TPS Sensor Voltages

My truck misses idling an is kind sluggish done did a tune up on it


This can be a number of things. Could have any of the following.

Bad fuel pressure either by a bad pump, bad fuel pressure regulator, bad injector
bad ignition coil pack
broken spark plug seems stupid but you only have to crack it just a hair and you will have a misfire
bad mass air flow sensor just unplug it and see if your idol returns
vacuum leak
bad egr valve or sensor
bad idol air control sensor


If you have not checked for stored codes then you may want to consider doing it. That will at least eliminate several of the items.

my 2002 ford f150 4.2 would not hold idle so we changed the fuel pump and fuel filter and relay now the truck starts holds idle runs good at low rpm but when i stomp it it runs then stalls and picks up again.

My car dies when I drive for a short time.


Check O2/mapp sensor. Also if you can elaborate on the behavior of the engine as it stalls, is there smoke, does it race then suddenly die out or does it barely run at a very slow unsteady idol until it floods out?

MY #2 CYLINDER IS MISFIRING ON A 2004 F-150 SUPER CREW CAB


Check spark plugs and wires. Could also be defective Coil.
I recommend replacing all plugs and wires at the same time.
