This can be due to one of a few different things...First of all, water flows from the engine to the bottom of the radiator, using the water pump and gravity, and the water returns from the radiator back into the engine on the top side.
Thermostat isn't opening...this causes the water / antifreeze to remain in the engine, and not flow through to the radiator. If the water / antifreeze gets hot enough, it should activate the thermostat and water should flow into the radiator through the bottom radiator hose.
The bottom radiator hose is either worn out (there is a spring inside the length of the bottom hose. it is there to keep the hose from collapsing under the suction pressure during normal use) If the hose feels spongy, soft, or shows signs of cracking, replace it.
The radiator may be clogged, preventing the water from flowing freely through all of the 'fins' in the grill section of the radiator. Hot water usually isn't just in the top section during a clogged radiator situation...
the top box as your calling it is the coolant expansion vessel and the cap is obviously for topping up coolant, the hose on the top of this vessel is the hose that carries the expanded coolant from the engine so that there is not to high a build up of pressure,the hose at the bottom of expansion vessel goes to the bottom hose via another set of hoses which link up the heater matrix, there is a top and bottom hose on the radiator , the top goes to the engine with the thermostat inline ,the bottom hose goes to the water pump for circulation .let me know your vehicle make and model , year etc and i'll find a diagram for you
Hi shawn, further to my previous post can you confirm that the vehicle has had a different engine installed from the original and if so what are they ? here is a diagram of the cooling syatem i think your talking about but the bigger the engine ie V6 or even a diesel, there may well be more coolant pipes,for heat exchangers etc,than are now required for a petrol engine hope this diagram helps keep me posted and include some photo's if you can
The water pump is enclosed on the front of the engine. The bottom radiator hose connects to the water pump inlet. You do not add coolant to the water pump. You add a 50-50 mix of antifreeze and water into the radiator cap opening. Or you can buy the coolant already mixed with water and just pour it into the radiator.
The coolant system uses the water pump to circulate the coolant through the engine and then into the radiator via the upper radiator hose for cooling it off, and it then goes back into the engine through the bottom radiator hose. When the engine is warmed up, the coolant constantly circulates through the engine to radiator and back into the engine.
try the scrapyard and look at one in their ,or ask a local owner that is just parking up in a supermarket and look at theirs .lots of different ways to overcome this problem but if the pipe has beeen disconnected its because the heater matrix is no doubt leaking
Heed of antifreeze solution temperature!!! You must check the thermostat operating. The thermostat location is on back of alternator at the bottom side of the bracket. IMPORTANT: It is NOT necessary to replace the alternator if you want to change the thermostat !!! Thermostat checking: 1. Cold engine. Start up the engine and watch of the water temp indicator. After first value 60 Celsius Degree you still warm up the engine until the lifter (pointer) reach 80 C deg. (second mark after 60 C deg.). At this time you let engine running at idle speed and check with your hand the thermostat plastic housing and hose temperature in bottom left side of the engine. Heed of alternator driving belt and ventilator fan !!! 2. If the thermostat is good the hose must be cold until the water temp indicator reach almost 90 C deg. 3. The thermostat opening temperature is 87 C deg. 4. If the hose is already warm the thermostat is out of order.
it may be a little off, but the lower water hose seldom gets very hot,, as its this hose that suplyes the engine with ""cold water"" the hot water comes out the top hose,, drains down the rad and cools on the way down then enters the engine through the bottom hose """if your engine stayes running in the normal place on the gage,,,and not over heating""" why are you spending money for nothing???""
you wont get the bottom hose to run hot unless the engine is cooking
This is how I like to do it. Make sure the car is parked with the front end at an upward angle. Drain the coolant from the petcock at the bottom of the radiator. Remove the upper and lower hoses at the radiator. Remove the thermostat housing, and the heater core hoses at the fire wall. Flush out the radiator by pouring fresh water into the overflow, and the hole where the thermostat was. Flush the heater core as best you can by pouring fresh water into the heater core hose connections. Let all the water drain out, then button everything back up and replace the thermostat with a new one. Refill the rad and engine by filling the coolant reservoir with a mix of 50% water and 50% antifreeze, or buy the premixed stuff from the auto parts store. (Buy 4 jugs of premix or 2 of straight antifreeze) Run the engine until it reaches operating temperature and the upper rad hose gets hot. Rev the engine a little to help get the air out of the cooling system. When the thermostat opens, the coolant level will drop in the reservoir, so top it up and replace the cap. Check for leaks, and check the coolant level for the next few days, and check for leaks. Dispose of the old coolant responsibly
