IT will just click. do nothing. or turn very slowly on a fully charged battery. Most people change a starter when it is nothing more than a bad battery ( have a load test done first) or a faulty starter solenoid ( replaceable and repairable). Sometimes it will do nothing until you try the start position several times and then suddenly it is ok and will be so for days then it is back to the problem. This indicates a dry joint in the armature that stops under a brush and there is no circuit to turn the armature . This is repairable with a new armature or a new starter.

How to check to see if starter switch is bad

Take a test light and clip the end to a good ground and probe the small contact on the starter solenoid. Have someone turn the key to the crank position, making sure you are clear of all moving engine parts. If the test light-lights when the key is in the crank position, then it is most likely the starter needs replacing. If if does not, then I would look at the start fuse or look over the wiring for a bad spot or bad connection.

I have a 2003 ford explorer. The starter will click but the car will not start. I have had the starter tested and it tested good. I have replaced the relay fuse and have put on a new battery. How can a...

have someone turn key and you grab the battery cables and twist/ wiggle them and also pull upward on positive cable going to starter to see if it makes a better contact to start truck. I dont know who or how the starter got tested but normally if the starter just clicks it is either not enough power going to starter motor, or the starter selonoid is bad, or the starter motor is bad. so double check all cables and cable ends, and all cable contacting points. check battery for tight posts and connections.

Drove car, the next morning car dont turn over but all lights and horn is working

you may still need to try a boost from another car.it may still not have enough of a charge to turn starter. any clicking at all when you attempt to start? if this does'nt work, look under hood in black main fuse box, lift cover off box.under the cover you should see locations of certain fuses and relays. check for bad starter relay or fuse, also check for a main ecm fuse bad and a bad main engine fuse bad. the only other alternative is bad starter. don't know how mechanically inclined you are but if a starter going bad, sometimes you can get one last start out of a bad starter by tapping on it while someone holds key in start position. do not attempt if you're not mechanically inclined as there are very high voltage wires going to the starter that you don't want to accidently hit and short out! hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com

The starter is bad. Solenoid is good, the starter itself is bad. You can remove it and take it to Schuck's/Chief's/Kragen/NAPA, they will test it for FREE. You can't beat free!!!
