If there is no "Check Engine" light try a bottle of good injector cleaner in your gas, or cleaning the throat of your throttle body with a good spray cleaner. If the "Check Engine" light comes on then put it on a code scanner and that will point you in the right direction.
From the symptoms of the problem and the precautions you have done i think its time to check the EGR valve.Clean your EGR valve and then put it again. How handy you are in ding this?
As the check engine light is on did you scan for error code which will help you more specific to locate the problem.
Sounds like the vacuum modulator on the side of the transmission or the vacuum hose going to the unit. I'm not sure if buick Is fed off of the carburetor vacuum or there's a vacuum tree on the rear of the engine block that may feed it as well. Typically if there is a vacuum leak to the modulator, your engine power will be decreased and your engine will be running rough.
have the coils and control module tested, sounds like you lost a coil so it not firing on all cylinders, it puting gas into nexhaust thats the smell, have it checked asap so you dont damage converter, hope this helps.

Given the amount of electronic's on your vehicle , an control modules , have a full vehicle scan done . Not at a parts , thier diagnostic tool will not check BCM -body control module , Instrument cluster , air bag module codes . Your vehicle maybe have communication problem between modules . Suggest you google GM class 2 serial data communication network .
