My first thought is a clogged fuel filter.

SOURCE: 2004 cavalier fuel problem?

Please call me its easier to explain on the phone, in the mean time try something easy hit the fuel pump on thebottom with a brick or rock then have someone listen to the fill neck of the tank for the two second "buzz" as soon as you turn on the ignition, has this vehicle been run way way low on fuel many times or the fuel filter neglected to been changed at the 15,000 miles interval?
call me or I can call you 253-691-6206

SOURCE: acts like its out of gas

It is most likely your main relay. You can replace it, or if you are somewhat mechanically incline do a google search on repairing main relay, and you will find info on repairing cracked solder (the reason the problem is intermittent).

Smell fuel leftside of engine

spray carb cleaner on the motor as it is running. Fuel leak will be more noticeable and engine will try to die when spraying. May be a bad throttlebody gasket at the base and it's not letting you see it.

My 90 Ply. will cut off after just a few miles and will not restart. But after it sets for over an hour or so it starts and is good for a couple more miles before it cuts off again?

Have fuel pressure tested when no start. Or, if you have no access to pressure test, try removing air intake hose at front of throttlebody and give a good spray of quickstart, or WD-40 with throttle plate open, then try starting. If it fires up momentarily then dies, I'd be looking real close at fuel pump, or at the least fuel filter. The fuel pressure test will confirm.

First it wouldn't stay started and was cutting out, then just wouldn't start at all. the after a few hours and a tow home it started but still cuts out when i accelerate. changed plugs wires and fuel...

check fuel pressure, should be 40 psi. Also, spray AMF sensor on big air intake tube with spray carb cleaner. the 2 short wires inside the sensor.

go here, join the group, keep your V running forever.

Holden Nova 92, Car starts OK but cuts ot after 2 mins of idolling. Is this a coil or ignition module probelm?

Try cleaning the carbs with a foam cleaner that you spray into the air intake while it is running.
I found amsoil foam cleaner works well.

Try spraying starter fluid into the throttlebody...if it starts or fires, your fuel pump is bad. It will cost something around the $300-$400 mark to replace. Hope this helps!

Starts but won't stay running

I would sooner think it was caarbon on the throttle plates and a very dirty idle air control
Take off the air intake tubing so you can see the throttle plate on the rear side of the throttlebody there is a small round electrical item the connector will likely come in from the side on the end of this item it will have two (2) TORX head screws holding it on you can see the tim if you get a bright flashlight and look straight down into the hole in the throttlebody near the idle air controller you hould see a tapered plunger its likely all coated with carbon. its best to remove the IAC and thuroughly clean it but some good carb spray may do it on the plunger. Now open the throttle and put a stick or a brick on the accelerator pedal of course with the engine off!!!!! the throttle plate will wide open dont put your fingers in theere in case the accelerator snaps shut it will cut your finger nearly off, clean BOTH sides of the place till its spotless and the walls as far down as you can reach all around rinse it good with carb cleaner and take the block off the accelerator , put everything back togother and start it it will start hard but it will start and rev it up gently a few times and see if it idles better if not you need to remove the IAC and clean correctly. If this information helps please give me a fixya Rating thanks,Randy
contact me if you have any questions
you should use about half the can of carb cleaner to do this.
