Question about 1991 Volvo 240

My 240 4 dr sedan isreally low in the rear and what else besides shocks can I do- could I use spacers in the springs ---also is there a special shock that would be the best for my problem

Check for rusted body parts,suspension mounts etc

May have to replace the springs

Shocks have nothing to do with ride height

I have had the same symptom on my 1994' 960 (sedan).

I thought (told by the dealer) the shocks had worn out (although the car was only 110000 km !...), so I had the dealer change them (they had a promotion). It did not change much of anything, except it lifts a little bit more (about 1 cm more), but still "sags" after about 1/2 hour.
It takes about 1 km driving to pump back up.

I have never been observing that symptom on nivomat-equipped 940 wagons with solid rear axles, and knowing that 960 sedans (with multilink rear suspension) having nivomat wider (3.5") than rear solid axle wagons (940 and early 960) which are 2.5".

So, my interpretation is those wider ones support a great deal of the weight, even more that of 940 wagons, so they react differently by sagging more, due to internal micro-leaks.
Also, and consistently, springs with nivomats are thinner and they may also wear out faster than on standard supension, putting even more load on nivomats to compensate.

Therefore my conclusion was :
- It is not because of the shocks,
- It may be the springs
- It is not really a problem, is it ?

Rear supension


Most likely spring.... look under and make sure it didn't break off from the car frame or crack.... check to see if the shock popped through the body.... the spring holds the car away from the tires and the shock stops the car from bounceing... also check to see if the rear stableizer didn't let go.... this keeps the tire in the upright position.

My 2003 oldsmobile bravada back end sits very low. Its either my strut or shocks.My question is, for this model, are the rear shocks coil or air springs?


The shocks do not set ride Hightower. The leaf springs set ride hieght in the rear. So ether the leaf springs are worn out or the shackles that hold the springs to the frame are broken (should be very obvious if they are). Most likely the rear leaf springs are the problem.

Hello, Here is what you might try. First, go to DiscountTire.com and look at their tire comparison features on the Website. You will see "tools" that show what size tires will fit on your rims and what extra size rims will fit under your wheelwells. There is also a speed calculator for using the larger size tires over stock and it will show speedometer error if you do not recalibrate the speedo.

Next would be using spacers on the bottom of the springs or having longer springs refitted to your car. Finally air shocks front and back will give you some lift. The Grand Marquis can have rear air suspension, but to use it like you want, you will need to reconfigure the pump and change limit switches.

If you do all of this, you may reach your 4" lift. Your ride quality once you start changing springs and limiting travel in the suspension will probably deteriorate. As your car is a body on frame design, you may be able to put spacers of 1/2" to 1" under the body to frame mounts. You would need to make up the distance for the steering shaft, A/C lines and possibly hoses throughout.

In general, an inch from the tires, two inches from the springs or air shocks, and the balance from body on frame spacing.

I changed from the low 60 Series tires to a 65 Series tire on my own Grand Marquis. You can get a 70 Series to fit. I looked at Police car tires and they used 60 Series. But going back to 1994 Models, the 70 Series tire was available from the factory.

How to disassemble the rear end in a 2000 gmc yukon and how to remove axles


Removal & Installation To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel and tire assemblies but do not remove the lug nuts
  3. Raise and support the vehicle
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Wheel and tire assemblies
    • Axle lubricant into a suitable container
    • Rear driveshaft
    • Parking brake cable
    • Brake calipers
    • Shock absorbers from the axle brackets
    • Vent hose from the rear axle vent fitting
    • Nuts and the washers from the U-bolts
    • U-bolts, spring plates and spacers from the axle assembly
  5. Lower the axle assembly from the vehicle
To Install:
  1. Place the rear axle assembly under the vehicle
  2. Align the rear axle assembly with the springs then connect the spacers, spring plates and the U-bolts to the rear axle
  3. Raise the rear axle assembly into position
  4. Install or connect the following:
    • Washers and nuts to the U-bolts; Torque to: 59 lb-ft. (80 Nm) then, Torque to: 89 lb-ft. (120 Nm)
    • Vent hose to the rear axle vent fitting
    • Shock absorbers to the rear axle
    • Brake calipers (See: Brake Caliper)
    • Parking brake cable (See: Parking Brake Cable)
    • Rear driveshaft (See: Rear Driveshaft)

  5. Fill the rear axle with lubricant
  6. Bleed the brake system (See: Brake Bleeding)
  7. Install the wheel and tire assemblies
  8. Lower the vehicle to the ground

    • Single Wheel: Torque to: 140 lb-ft. (190 Nm)
    • Dual Wheel: Torque to: 175 lb-ft. (240 Nm)
  10. Road test the vehicle to check performance

How do i raise an 89 sedan deville with air struts i've ripped out my high pressure line twice and have decided to raise the car and might put some bigger rims on it


You should have coil over stuts/shocks. On the rear you will have to put a coil kit on, but the front is ready to be changed. All you have to do is replace the air shocks with normal shocks with coil springs/helper springs. You can normally find these kits at auto supply stores, but you can also find them online, and possibly eBay. Make sure to shop around before you make a purchase. Your other option is to replace your air bags with lifter shocks. You would run the air lines to a convenient place where you can air them up manually. This would allow you to change the height of the car and the ride of the car. But this will make the "Cadillac ride" become more of a truck feel. Hope this helps you with your decision.

How to install shocks on 1956 ford sedan


They are real simple. The bottom fronts have mounting plates where the bolts go into the lower "A" leaf and the tops have a stem. On the rear its mounting bolts. There are lots of rubber bushings on them.

I had 2 1956 Fords myself, a Customline and a Crown Vic convertible. One had a 312 Interceptor engine and the other was a 292. Both had the Teapot carbs.

At one time you could get adjustable shocks or booster springs to fit around the rear shocks.

You can get a decent pair of gas charged shocks or monroe load leveler shocks (if they are available for your car) However, it's likely that the rear springs have sagged. You can easily replace them with either oem or a stronger variable rate spring.

locate the ride height control sensor box with a small rod connected to the rear control arm. this rod needs to be loosened and raised about 1 and 1/2 inches, and tightened in place. this will only work if your rear load leveling still works on the car, as the air shocks are pumped up resulting in a lift w/out fuckin up the whole car
