Question about 1998 Ford Taurus
...However, the electric push-button opens it dependably.
I'm guessing you bought the car used this happened to me and it was because the trunk had been replaced from a wreck and thus ended up being keyed different A locksmith can make you a new key otherwise its a pain Cuz if the battery goes dead you can't open it

Testimonial: "Thanks for your help. The owner (my father) said he bought the 'fleet car' used. However, he also added that his ignition key has worked to manually open the trunk for years with no problem until now. I guess this is new added info which makes your potential fix N/A for now. I'm going to try WD-40 today in case it's a weather issue (it's not in a garage)."

Check your fuse box, look on the diagram and locate the fuse (10 amp most likely) for the auto trunk. The clicking is the relay, it also operates the keylees entry for the doors.

Had a question about this yestrerday, they had a blanket caught in the hatch.
If you can not get the latch to release from the outside, you may have to take the panel off on the inside and try to unbolt the latch.
