Question about Saturn L

Saturn overheating Started overheating on long trip last yr. only 74,000 miles. Replaced thermostat, radiator, H2O pump and heater core. Still over heating, bypassed heater core, stopped overheating. They went to replace heater core again thinking it was defective and discovered what looks like natural gray rock salt near heater core and near reservoir. Couple of tablespoon's came out. They flushed cooling system and blew/flushed out heater core. Still over heating a little. What is the rock salt like stuff and how to fix it?

The stuff describe most likely from the anti boil -anti freeze mixture that has become ineffective for not being changed regularly and not up to percentage to do the job. It allows the aluminium parts of the car to corrode and what you see is the end result . It will deposit in the cores of the radiator and block them up resulting in a replacement radiator . You can expect corroded aluminium parts from all areas of the motor.

SOURCE: 1994 Honda Civic LX\overheating within 2 mile drive

Remove and raise upper hose at thermostat end and remove lower rad hose.
Fill rad with a hose and watch for flow from bottom rad hose and/ or bottom rad hose connecton.......water should fall though rad easily.
Honda rads are cheap.....any restriction....replace rad.

Remove thermostat....fill thermostat housing with hose and watch for water flow at bottom rad hose.
Flush good.

Remove heater hoses.......flush back and forth until a good flow is present "With heater control set to hot" if no or poor flow....replace heater core.

Stop leak can plug everything.

Also.......not likely causing over heating....but ....at your mileage,if you do not know if the timing belt has been changed.....CHANGE IT NOW!
Water pump is optional at this mileage.

It is your heater core, there is nothing else left.

The heater housing is usually under the dash, and it must be removed to gain access to the heater core.Procedures for removing a dash, and heater core vary. But for the core:
The heater housing must be removed, and then you
"remove the panels" or "split the case"1c3d50c.gif (Usually screwed together.)
Remove the coolant hoses, the cable and vacuum control line.
Remove the heater core bracket and clamps.
To install the new heater core, reverse the removal steps.
Core leaks **** because of the core's location deep within the firewall/ dashboard of the car.
So remember to liquid test your new one before you put it back in, or you could be sorry.

I don't know your vehicle, but does it have a blower door tucked in where the heater core is? If it DOES and that's broken then it could be the whole problem. It would mean it isn't switching from the A/C side of things to the heat side of them. Hope this helps, good luck! Also, just looked up the proper name for what I'm talking about, it's called a "blend door" and I think your car has one. It's what I would check, again, good luck!

Pontiac sunfire overheating


hello! I had the same problem with my 2000 Pontiac Sunfire... there might be one of these 2 problems with it.... maybe the Heater Core is jammed and the coolant dosen't flow thru the engine to cool it off, or the water pump is defective.... does the heating works or not? if yes, the water pump is defect, if not, the heater core is jammed, try a ''radiator hose cleaner'' (sold in Napa's or Carquest..) it will act as a kind of ''decloaker''.. if works, good! 15$ solution... if not, replace Heater Core... ~150$

most likely heater core and to check if the water pump working..allow vehicle to warm up enough for thermostat to open and check for circulation in the fluid inside the radiator..if see it..water pump works.

I had the water pump replaced. Is there a relay or a valve that controls the heater, or would a thermostat control it???


i didn't see you last posting about your water pump but theres is a tiny radiator called a heater core. it has the same hot water running through it as your big radiator and engine have.so when you turn your thermostat to hot and kick on the fan the fan blows through the heater core and wallaa you have heat you probably need a thermostat.if you have no heat and it is overheating hear and there that's probably what you need.make sure you see if you filled the radiator up all the way when you changed the water pump.

Overheating


One of two things. if it is not leaking either it is the heater core or the thermostat. if it is the thermostat you will most likely have no hot air when you turn on the heat. if it is the heater core you MAY smell antifreeze inside your car when you have the heat on.

Mini Cooper convertible is overheating, fan contiues after stop


I had this exact same problem -- for about a year and a half! Replaced thermostat, replaced sensor twice, replaced overflow tank, replaced radiator cap, placed a grounding kit on the car in case the problem was electrical ... and was ABOUT to replace thermostat again and then the water pump when a new mechanic suggested we bleed air out of the cooling system. The heater core was PACKED with air, as was the upper hose valve area. Previous mechanic had been using a pressurized fill device to bleed the system and this had just been backing air into the heater core. There are two valves under the hood for bleeding air -- one on the heater core and one on the upper hose. It only takes a few minutes to fix this!

Chevy S10 overheated, now heat doesn't work, leaking coolant


When an engine is overheating and then the temp drops on the guage, it's usually a sign that the coolant is not touching the temp sensor. There's no coolant in the engine. Putting water in the overflow tank won't solve this. Take the radiator cap off after the engine cools and put coolant in the radiator. you might have to crank the engine and do this several times, as the engine can develop air pockets that won't allow the coolant to travel inside the engine. If you don't see any leaks, and it still uses coolant, you've probably got a blown head gasket. Check for water on the plugs, check cylinder compression. If it slowly uses coolant, try putting a large box of pepper in the radiator or some of that radiator seal copper flakes.
