Question about Dodge Dakota

Blows 40 amp fusable link

Blows 40 amp fuse 2 seconds after I turn the key to start, then nothing , not even a click. Starter and solenoid checkout ok at the parts store.

Hi Art, I'm glad to help. The fusable link you are talking about doesn't go to the starter itself. Here's what I need you to do. Disconnect all the wiring going to the Alternator and see if it still blows the link. If it doesn't then replace the Alternator for an internal short. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Art.

Could be one of two things.

1. Your starter motor is no good.
2. If you turn on your lights and try to start the car and they dim to almost black, then you need to check the battery connections.

I have run into this problem. The installation location of the starter is very critical to have a good ground. On the EJ25 motors the way the starter mounts with one bolt to the trans and the other through the trans to the block makes it difficult to get a really good ground. I would make sure you have a nice clean secure ground. Hope this solves your problem, nothing worse than having a Subie and not being able to use it. Good luck.

sounds to me that you have an igniton problem not a starter problem and or if you have or had an alarm system could be cause if u do give me feedback and i will explain but seems that your starter is fine from what u say but if you think in terms of the elemts to start a vehicle batery gives pwoer to ignition which sends to starter which gives spark etc i would check you ignition system something is causeing a short and not alowing starter to function

It is possible that the starer is pulling too much amperage- 1st thing you need to do is find out what if any other consumers are on that circuit, 2nd you need to find out how much amperage is being consumed by the starter. 3rd test you wires most likely if a wire problem it is the heavy hot wire on the starter or the back of the alternator has a loose retaining nut

your barking up the wrong gum tree witht the starter motor ,you have an electrical supply problem on the battery terminal area with more than one wire connected or a dodgy earth cable from the engine to the chassis .i would be inclined to check and fit another earth cable from a good connection on the engine -(bell housing) and run it back to battery terminal to eliminate all posibilitys .before anything else ,make you own if you have to but only use copper cable .this is my last question for tonight ,have to go pick er indoors up from work now

Trying to find fusable link in 97 honda civic dx. Starter and the solenoid are good, but still no power, no turn over, just plain dead everywhere.


There are none. It uses maxi fuses, not fusible links. Here are the two fuses to check that supply power to the ignition switch: fuse 41, an 80 amp battery fuse, and fuse 42, a 40 amp IG1 fuse (ignition 1).

check that the small wire on the solenoid is not touching the big terminal on the starter solenoid or is not shorting out any where .

have you crossed the solenoid terminals and checked the starter for operation? may have the battery cable burnt thru to ground by the exhaust side of the motor..it happens if the cable is up against the block..

Which is the correct fuse for the starter? Also, what position is this fuse in the fuse box?


Ther should not be a fuse directly for the starter on your car. It would be for your ignition. If you are having problems as to the car not even turning over I would check the power in the battery. if you have plenty there check to make sure there is power to the main wire on the starter (the big one). if good there you can have someone turn the key to see if you are getting pwoer to the little wires on the solenoid when the key is turned. if you are it sounds like a starter. If not ther are fusable links to those wires. You need to check the fusable links. That to me is where I would start if it is not even turning over. I hope this helps and good luck.

Replaced the battery and the starter but the truck wont start.when u turn the key to start it nothing happens


The problem could be in the key switch, In the starter relay switch, solenoid, fuse pannel, or a fusable link. Good luck.

40 amp ignition fuse blew. I replaced the fuse and now the lights all go on when the key is turned on but the vehicle will not start...or even try to start. The battery is fully charged.


The 40 amp maxi fuse in the underhood junction block (According to the information I have, there is only one 40 amp fuse in there..) goes directly to the ignition switch. From there, it goes to the buss bar in the Instrument Panel Fuse Block where it feeds several smaller fuses. It also feeds the starter relay in the Underhood Fuse and Relay Center.

My biggest concern would be: What caused the fuse to blow in the first place?

If you get nothing else from my preaching, get this:

Fuses don't blow for no reason....ESPECIALLY not a 40-amp Maxi Fuse!

I can't count how many times I have heard people say: "It's JUST a blown fuse." WHAT???

I have been at this for 35 years and I can tell you that blown fuses are reason for major concern in my book. That 40-Amp Maxi Fuse just saved your truck from burning to the ground and you need to find out why!

The only way that fuse is going to blow is if there is a direct short to ground between the Underhood Fuse and Relay Center and the Instrument Panel Fuse Block (The only "component" between these two is the ignition switch.) or if the secondary side of the starter relay circuit is shorted to ground. The secondary side of the starter relay feeds the "S" terminal of the starter solenoid. (at the starter)

I think the first place I would look for the problem would be the circuit between the starter relay and the starter. It is likely to be shorted against the exhaust or engine block. If this is the case, it most likely fried the starter relay in the process. (which is why the fuse no longer blows and the engine no longer starts)

Aftermarket remote starting units are also usually tied into this circuit. If your vehicle has one of these, it could very likely be the original source of your problem.

At any rate, there should be no rest, truck running or not, until the reason for the blown fuse is found. You will most likely get the truck running in the process of locating the reason for the blown fuse.

Fuses only blow if-Old,Overheated or you have a Short circuit.
That should be any easy fix,to the extent that there aren't many 40 Amp Fuses and you will need a wiring diagram to follow the problem from the fuse to the cause. If you know what fuse it is, you can guess,but I wouldn't recommend that,it will be time consuming and maybe costly ,if you don't have a test procedure to follow and throw parts at it.
Don't replace the fuse.Their expensive and will keep blowing.

Im have a 40 watt fuse that blows when i start my truck occasiona


It could be either the ignition switch,clutch safety switch(if applicacle)or the starter solenoid,I'm including the circuit diagram for you,one of the 2 or three if it's manual trans has short,if the fuse is blowing as soon as you turn the key on(not engaging the starter)it will be in the switch itself or the clutch safety switch.If it happens when you go to engage the starter it's most likely the solenoid.
