1993 GEO METRO DYING CONSTANTLY

I have a 1993 GEO METRO 3 CYLINDER HATCHBACK. AUTOMATIC.

It is CONSTANTLY dying at every stop and acceleration is so horrible that I have been almost hit several times in the middle of the road.

Once it gets going it is seems to be fine. It will die at EVERY stop, and forwards/backwards, sometimes several times before I shift it fast enough and hit the accelerator fast enough as well.

It does seem to sound different like a stronger muffler sound with occasional muffler/exhaust popping sound.

I had the fuel filter replaced and it was 3/4 stopped up. But it didn't help it one bit.

It starts up fine when the starter doesn't make that shrill misfire sound. I usually turn the ignition off and it starts up fine if the battery isn't dead.

When I say dead battery I have to start it so many times in a day that it drains the battery and I have to charge it to use it again or get home.

I am about to pull my hair out. I am on a fixed income and this really sucks as this car gets about 40 miles to the gallon and is a huge gas saver.

Open the hood when it is dark out. Start the engine and have someone look at the plug wires to see if they are sparking. If they are you need to replace them.

There are quite a few possible problems. One likely possibility is burnt valves. Usually the exhaust valves will wear and begin to leak. That makes a car miss or die at low speeds and accelerate poorly, but perform adequately at high speeds. Getting a compression check will tell you if the valves are OK or not. Low compression (without water in the oil or exhaust) means the valves are bad.

Have you had someone check to see if the fuel pump is working properly? Locate the pump, and if its not inside the tank have someone listen as you turn the key on. If the pump is working let me know and I will look deeper into it.

For a car this old I suggest you check the used auto parts places in your community. This car is 15 years old, and it would be almost impossible to find a new one.
