Question about Suzuki Grand Vitara
2001 grand vitara . Transmission will not engage. Shifter slides easily to all R,N,D,2,1. Transmission level full. Did something disconnect? Is there a good source of information about how to troubleshoot problem?
Have you checked the shifting linkage to make sure its connected.this may be rods or cable(s).if thats ok
you should find a mechanic.you may have a" bad TRANS"
a transmission shop should be able to scan the transmissions computer

SOURCE: My 2002 Taurus wont go into gear
I have almost 30 years rebuilding transmission, use to own an AAMCO, the number one trans of all time that I have rebuilt have been the taurus. It is not your shift solenoid, it would still move and have reverse (reverse does not use a solenoid. The shifter cable could be a problem but I doubt it. It would be very loose if it was broken.
Check your fluid level running and not running, If it si the same level, your pump failed. In any event you probably are looking at a Major repair.

Testimonial: "thanks man the linkage was broken "
This vehicle has a pair of shift cables which attatches to the shifter and runs to the transmission shift housing. To diagnose, removal of the center console is in order so you can inspect and verify the shifter/cable connections and movement, then verify the cables move the linkages properly at the transmission . These cables are a fairly common failed part and sold as the set, these are a dealer item and no aftermarket cables are available .

CHECK BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH FUSE AND BRAKE TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK SOLENOID FUSE.IF BOTH FUSES ARE GOOD.PROBLEM IS THE BRAKE SWITCH FAULTY OR BRAKE TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK SOLENOID IS FAULTY.

Does it feel like the shifter cable is actually moving the detent in the transmission? I've seen a broken shifter cable in a cavalier a while back with the same symptoms you described. Check the cable where it connects to the transmission. It's under the hood on the drivers side.
