I just encountered same issue. Upon closer inspection, the bolts that mount the half shaft on passenger side fell out and shaft is just laying there. Shaft is not in transmission as far as it should be. It will be fine when I put them back.

Sounds like your automatic transmission is failed and grinding itself up. How often have you had the transmission fluid changed? You are going to have to REPLACE the transmission and not even try to repair it. Once they start grinding things up , they are not repairable.

grinding noises from the transmission usually mean metal parts are destroying each other.

The other possibility is an engine mount has failed and what you are hearing IS NOT from the transmission, but from the engine rubbing against the frame somewhere.

When I put my 98 Maxima in gear, it starts making a very loud noise under teh car. It will go into gear and move, but the noise will only stop if I put it in park or neutral.

If noise comes from transmission in D range -no drive. Then i thing of AT internal problem. If in D during driving then you have to check drivetrain, like axles or bearings. or AT.

The gear shift electrical relay or module inside it is not reading the signal to release. You need to have the electronic relay or module repaired or the gear shift assembly replaced.

Gear shift

Do you hear a clicking sound coming from the shifter area everytime you hit the brake pedal, while the vehicle is is "P" park position?? There should be a clicking sound right by the shifter. That's the shifter lock solenoid. If that's not clicking you will not get the car out of park. Let me know what you found.
