For some toyotas (I own a 1994 4-runner) there is an emissions-control feature that disables Overdrive until the engine is up to full temperature.
In my case, it would get into overdrive, but it took a very long time to get there, especially in winter. Turns out that the thermostat was stuck open, so the engine was running very cold. About $150 got me a new thermostat and now it's all better.

Hope that helps!

1989 Toyota Camry automatic transmission starting off on high gear.Stalls on drive like pulling heavy loads.

It is quite likely to be a failed shift solenoid, causing inability to find low gears. There should be a trouble code stored, causing the O/D lamp to blink.

why not tell is this.
1: what transmission, its and automatic right>
2: and what it does wrong, exactly and clearly
3: stated all things it does good and bad, ALL !
4: and does it fail hot and cold engine or both? key that is.
do all gears fail. and how.
slips, dead, jerky, flares?
in gear , can you make engine RPM go over 3000 rpm not moving
or with it slipping>????????
do you know the difference from a weak engine and a slipping trans or clutch? if not, ask that first.

Is there a difference between a manual and auto engine in the 1996 toyota camry widebody or is it just in the gearbox

  • Manual and standard are references to the transmission. Manual being where the transmission runs the gears on its own. Standard being a "stick" where the driver switches gears.

  • Hope this helps.

Changed cyl head, on 1996 2.2 toyota camry, cant seem to figure out cam timing

there is a hole in the camshaft gear turn the gear until it lines up with a mark in the cylinder head at the top. then line the crankshaft gear mark up with the mark on the block. sometimes the best way to see the camshaft timing mark is with a mirror.
