your shift cable has snapped and needs to be replaced there is not really any reliable quick fix but you can shift by pushing or pulling on the snapped portion of the cable

I have the same damned thing and it made the car fail an inspection. The brake works fine, it's just the cheap plastic button that disengages the ratchet that holds the lever broke.
It's like a rally car now (the lack of a lock makes hand brake skids easier).
I haven't found any solutions online, other than replacing the plastic handle and button as one assembly ... but what if something is broken inside?
