I had the same problem on a 94 dodge with the cummins. It seems the crank sensor that reads from a notch on the harmonic balancer was the problem Without this sensor reading that the engine is running the alternator wont charge. Possibly the same problem with yours

Under the hood, on the drivers side, right by the bulkhead firewall is a
big black knurled cap...thats the lid of the fuel filter. Make sure you
release the pressure first by turning the yellow lever underneath! that
will help drain it. Make sure your turn it back after you put the new
one in and restarting!
You can get a free manual for it on pdftown.com too!

SOURCE: a diagram for changing the
On a cummins turbo diesel the water pump replacement is quite simple i do believe. just have to remove the belt. The clutch fan, and pulley, then the water pump is right there i believe being held on by 4 bolts only and remove. Remember to place the wate pump o-ring on the water pump and hold in place with sort of adhesive just to make sure it doesn't slip out during installation or this will cause a leak. Once everything is installed then you will need to purge the cooling system of the air bubbles by letting it run and watching when the thermostat opens up. You can tell because the level will drop in the rad or over bottle, depending on what controls the fluid. Let it open two or three times, and go for test drive, all should be well...hope this helps

The starter electric motor for a Diesel engine, is mostly the same as the used in gas cars. The problem you may have is that the solenoid of the starter is welded and thus continues to feed current onto the motor, even if you turn the key off.
You could try to go to the car parts store and give the Brand name of the car, the model year and the type of engine to the sales person, so that he can find in the catalog, the right replacement motor and solenoid, as they may come together, because of the heavy connections required to pull high amperage from the battery, required to move the crankshaft of the engine.
It could be also possible that the main switch is keeping a undesirable contact that keeps the starter motor running.
One trick is to turn ON the key and wait 10 to 15 seconds, specially in cold weather, without calling the starter to run, that may heat the contacts, prior to produce the pressure that makes the Diesel to work. This is just a test suggestion.
This is a common failure and you may save a lot of time and stress taking your car to an electric shop. They will inspect it to tell you if you need to change the parts in conflict or they repair it in a half of an hour.
