Sounds like a newer 5 series. The SZL module located in the steering column has failed. Most common indication of this failure is the wipers being stuck on. Unit will need to be coded by a professional. Just for fun you can try a memory dump: remove negative battery cable and then positive battery cable and touch them together for 30 minutes then reconnect everything and hope for the best. If the cables are too short to reach each other slide a screwdriver in through the negative opening and into the positive opening. MAKE SURE NEGATIVE CABLE DOESN'T TOUCH THE POSITIVE CABLE WHILE IT IS CONNECTED TO THE VEHICLE.

Hello. Your battery is run down, discharged, and will need charging up before it will start the car on its own. Don't know if that's why the car would not start the first time you tried it. It could be, if the battery wasn't spinning the engine fast enough to start.
You could try getting a boost from another car with battery jumper cables. Let someone hook it up, or show you how. If the engine won't start after a couple of tries, there may be some other reason it won't start, other than a weak battery. Better have the battery charged up off the car, and see a mechanic about the no start. But it may start with a strong battery. Now you know how a low battery affects the car's electrical system, so you are no longer totally clueless. Good luck.

Brand new battery is dead with nothing left on. Bad ground?

Remove positive battery terminal from battery & put a 12 volt test light in line between cable & battery post. As long as 12 volt light is illuminated, you have a draw. Start pulling & re-installing fuses, one at a time, until you see it dim or go out. If it goes out, you found your draw. If it dims, slight draw, such as radio memory etc. if all else fails, make sure you know where they all go, then pull them all, and start putting back one at a time. When light comes on bright, you found the circuit causing the draw.

Can the rear wiper drain the batter?

It's 1.48 am here and I'm rather sleepy but the other thing that springs to mind (bearing in mind the electrics on all cars are basically the weakest link) is a power drain. Basically that means there is still a loose connection somewhere on the car and quite possibly an earth.
If you lift the hood and check on the inside left and right wings you should see a whole bundle of sheathed and/or unsheathed wires bolted or held by a screw. Check the tightness and ensure this area is clean.
The weather could also be another factor, electrics don't like the cold and wet, so always keep a can of WD40 in the car and spray away at the electrics if you have car starting problems. Especially where the spark plug leads connect to the plugs.

2002 Freelander, all electrical died, jumping battery didn't work

Most likely right.... if the alternator quits you can often run off the battery but once you start accessories like wipers . heater etc it will not last long
