Take off the upper timing cover and disconnect the battery now put a socket on the crankshaft but and rotate engine in direction of travel . there's a mark on the crankshaft pulley and marks on the camshaft sprockets that will be at the top when you are at TDC. That's the basics. Remove spark plugs to ease rotating the crankshaft. Hope that helps

Camshaft Actuator System Description
The camshaft position (CMP) actuator system is used for a variety of engine performance enhancements. These enhancements include lower emission output through exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) control, a wider engine torque range, improved gas mileage, and improved engine idle stability. The CMP actuator system accomplishes this by controlling the amount of intake and exhaust valve overlap. For the 6.0 liter (LY6, L76) and the 6.2 liter (L92) engine, the Park position for the CMP actuator and camshaft is 8.5 degrees before top dead center (BTDC) or 17 crankshaft degrees BTDC. The engine control module (ECM) can only command the CMP actuator to retard the valve timing from the Park position or advance the valve timing back to the Park position. The total range of valve timing authority is 31 degrees camshaft rotation, or 62 degrees of crankshaft rotation. The control range is from the Park position of 8.5 degrees camshaft or 17 degrees crankshaft BTDC, to 22.5 degrees camshaft or 45 degrees crankshaft after top dead center (ATDC).

Top dead center and bottom dead center also known as ( TDC) and (BDC) Are two different positions of the piston while an engine is running. TDC is where the piston is as high as it can go in the cylinder and BDC is as low as the piston can go in the cylinder.

Hi the camshaft timing is two slots cut in the end of the camshafts where a locking plate can be inserted to hold the position of the camshafts the sprockets are not keyed and are a cone fit so dont undo them from the camshafts until you have locked them in the timed position
the crankshaft position should be marked on the pulley wheel and the front cover but are very hard to spot sometimes if you can get underneath the car its easier to spot with a torch from there
or if you remove the front pulley on the flat face of the bottom pulley sprocket is "D" on its side pointing to two marks at the top at the 12 oclock position is about tdc take care as the sproket is only pushed on a short way and can come off when uder belt pressur but is keyed so can be refitted easily or take a spark plug out of number one cylinder and use a long thin blade screwdriver to find top dead center by gently turning the crankshaft pulley until the screwdriver stops moving upwards and befor it moves down is roughly top dead center ,once you have top dead center found and the cams locked in position you have the engine timed and ready for adjustment or a belt change

The ignition timing is not adjusted with a timing light or with the engine running, and to set the ignition timing follow these proceedures.

There is a mark or notch on the distributor housing that the rotor should be pointing to when the engine is on top dead center. This "static" timing is all that matters and the computer will be able to control the timing as long as the ignition rotor is in that position when the engine is at top dead center.

1. Place the engine at top dead center.

2. Look under the distributor cap and find where the number one terminal runs under the distributor cap, and where that position on the distributor cap corresponds with the distributor housing, and it should match up to a mark or a notch on the distributor housing indicating the number one position.

3. With the engine on top dead center the ignition rotor should be pointing to the number one mark or notch that is on the distributor housing, if it is not then loosen up the distributor and turn the distributor until the ignition rotor is pointing to the mark or notch on the distributor housing and then tighten down the distributor, the engine should now be static timed.

If the distributor can not be turned enough to align the ignition rotor with the number one mark on the distributor housing, or the distributor does not set properly and will not allow the installation of the spark plug wires then the distributor is not installed correctly and is most likely a tooth off and it will need to be re-installed correctly. (The distributor should set like it is shown in the firing order diagram when it is properly installed)

How do you set the timing on a 1998 GMC Sierra?


The timing is not adjustable and it is computer controlled, but the distributor must still be clocked in properly and static timed, and here is how it is done.

it might be that when you reassembled it that something is wrong with the lifters.. did you label everyone and put it exactly in the original position? very critical that this be done because of the different wear on the camshaft lobes. all components should be put in exactly in there original positions. this is just a thought.. maybe someone else can come up with an easy fix for you.
