Question about 1998 GMC Sierra

I went to get the emission tested, for license plate purposes, and my car failed. The problem was P0104. Is it possible to fix this myself?

This code is for an issue with the Mass Airflow Sensor. It is inline from the air filter to the intake.

It is no big deal to replace the unit but you'll want to make sure it needs to be replaced before spending the money.

Check and make sure the wire into it is plugged in properly with no obvious fraying of the wires leading to the plug.

You'll also want to confirm the ducting is connected properly and has no leaks in the joints. I've seen these connections inadvertently separate when replacing the airfilter and the car will barely run.

If all looks fine, you'll have to evaluate the cost of a new unit (and the risk that fixes it) vs having a service tech find any other related problem. If it turns out to be a bad unit, you'll have saved a bunch. If it's not bad and a related problem you'll have wasted money.

Good luck.

Good luck.

Hi, the code means that ur MAF sensor is not working right, so ur trucks ECM is getting wrong information about air intake mass, temperature and humidity, thats why ur gases are wrong, because the mexture of air ans gas is not right.
the ecm is sending wrong voltages to your inyection nozzles, cause he does not have the right information about intake air. if they get wrong information the amount of gas inyected is wrong. thats what spoils ur gases and eventually hurt ur cathalist
u need to check if the maf is actually not working or the wiring from the maf to the ecm has damage.
hope this helps

Code P0104 means mass or volume air flow circuit intermittent. so there is something wrong with your mass air flow meter or map sensor which means manifold absolute pressure. its either the part itself or the circuit which powers the unit.

How would an Emission Center know about reflashing anything ?

If you went to a private shop, that is licenced to do emissions & they
worked on it & found a bulletin on reflashing, to solve a problem, then
that is a possible

If no road testing with scan tool & no component testing was done,
then they don't know what their taking about & should keep their
opinions to themselves

You failed for a reason
What was that reason?
What Emission Gas failed?

That is what you have a shop work on

Check enging light on 2003 Acura TLS doesn't come on when starting car. Failed emmision test because of it.

There is a problem with your OBDII (Onboard Diagnostics -2) system. The only way to find out why your Check Engine light is on is to scan your engine computer and find out which part of the system is failing. There will be fault codes stored in the computer to tell you. The failing system will then need to be diagnosed to locate the actual cause of the failure. Once this is completed, the computer will have to be reset, and the car will have to be driven (sometimes for several days) to get all of the computer monitors to run and recheck the system. If the repairs are successful, the same codes should not return. You may have new codes show up however. This is because some of the monitors are unable to run if the check engine light is on due to another failure. Sometimes a code like "Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold" will show up when they were not there before. This is because driving the vehicle with the Check Engine light on has destroyed the catalytic converters, but the code could not set previously because the catalyst monitor could not run to test the catalyst when the other problem was present. Now that the first problem has been corrected, the catalyst monitor now runs and has determined that the catalyst has been damaged.

This why I tell all my customers that the best time to get your car ready for an emissions test, is the minute the Check Engine light comes on. Ignoring this light and driving the vehicle with it on can damage some pretty expensive parts, as well as possibly costing you fines for not getting your vehicle "Legal" when it is time to renew licenses, etc. I live in Missouri, and you cannot renew your license plates without passing the emissions test - people wait until the last day to renew their registration and they get angry with me when I tell them it is going to take several days and possibly even a couple weeks to get their car to pass. It's not MY fault!!! THEY are the ones who chose to ignore the warning lamp!

I have a toyota corolla 2003 and recently went for an emissions test and passed. The day after my emission test, the engine light went on. I tried to unscrew and rescrew the gas tank cap, but it didn't...

After tightening the gas cap, you will have to drive the car a few 'cycles' before the light goes off. If that doesn't work, have the trouble codes read to find out exactly what is wrong and causing the light to illuminate.

What is the air pump for? Sounds like an airplane when I start the vehicle. What I disconnect the pump, what affect will that have on the car's running?

The air pump is an emission control device. It is not going to really affect the running of your car as far as performance; however, if you live in an area where they test for emissions, it could definitely cause you to flunk an emissions test.
